Two leading lights from Malta’s rugby community have been called upon to officiate at the European Nations Cup Division 2D match between Greece and Luxembourg in Athens this weekend.

Steve Busuttil, team manager for the National squad and Mike Beerman, MRFU’s director of administration will act as Referee and Match Commissioner respectively. This is the second time Steve and Mike have presided over a FIRA match together, the last time being Israel vs Luxembourg in March 2009.

The call up is an honour for the MRFU and Maltese rugby since all appointments are made by the European rugby organisation – FIRA-AER – and confirmed by President, Jean Claude Baque.

Saturday’s match will be the sixth time Mike Beerman has taken on the role of Commissioner which involves monitoring all aspects of the match according to FIRA-AER rules and regulations, of which there are many. “It’s a big responsibility”, said Mike “but I get a great deal of pleasure being able to put something back into the game after my years of involvement and enjoying the sport.”

A familiar presence at Marsa refereeing local league matches on a weekly basis, Steve Busuttil’s fourth call up as referee of an international match is testament to his experience and success in previous matches.

“It’s always a thrill to be asked to officiate at a match, but also a great learning curve”, said Steve. “We don’t ever underestimate the importance of taking on board new skills and practices as the result of working an international and bringing these experiences back to Malta is vital in terms of developing Malta’s presence on the international stage.”
