Malta Women 7’s Rugby Union Team win four matches

Wednesday, 05th June 2013, Malta – Malta’s national women 7′s rugby team was in action last weekend, at the FIRA European Championship Women’s 7s, played in Bratislava, Slovakia.The tournament, in which 12 teams were competing for the title, took place over Saturday and Sunday. Malta was in pool B, together with Turkey, Lithuania, Norway, Finland and Bosnia &Herzegovina.

Malta started on a positive with a safe win 31-5 over Turkey, using powerful running to break through. Turkey, who placed 7 appearance in the European championships this year, managed to score after their scrum, with a short side run a few metres away from the try line.

Next in line for Malta was Bosnia & Herzegovina, and this game had the highest score difference in the whole tournament with a final score of 59-0 for Malta, it was a great performance for the local side, taking on every opportunity to score and rack-up a confidence-boosting win.

Saturday was left with two more games for Malta, facing Finland and then Norway. It was a different story for Malta this time, they had a bigger challenge, both sides wanting to secure a place with higher rankings. Finland opened the score in the first half, and although Malta’s maintained good defensive structure, Finland managed to break through, with the final score 22-7 for Finland. Norway, who had probably the fastest player on board, had the win with a score of 24-5, and this game was the last encounter for Malta on the first day of the tournament. Ultimately both Finland and Norway made it to the finals playing for the 1st and 2nd place.

On Sunday morning Malta played Lithuania, who had finished their first day with a win, but Malta sealed yet another win with a strong 54-0 over the Lithuanians. With this game, Malta ranked 3rd in pool B, meaning they would play the 4 countries had faced each other in previous years and it was always a challenge for both sides.This time around Malta had the better of the Andorrans, with a clean sheet 31-0 to Malta.

This win over Andorra meant that Malta was playing their final match of the tournament for the plate, against Latvia this time. The plate final score was 20-5 to Latvia, and even though the result was against Malta the team showed persistence till the last whistle when they scored their only try of the match.

With four wins out of seven, Malta placed 6th out of twelve teams competing. The Malta  team, which included new faces from four local clubs, was made up of: Marion Azzopardi (captain), Rodianne Bugeja, Marilyn Grech, Amanda Cassar, Dorien Jager, Beverie Sultana, Vanessa Attard, Marion Pullicino, Myra Bonello, Lorna Mifsud, Sairita Cassar and Lorraine Cutajar.

National Coach Damian Neill, manager Carmelo Longo and physio Steven Cilia, accompanied the team through this experience which was described by players as a positive one, with a solid foundation to build upon for the future.
