The Euro 2008 qualifier football match that pitted Norway and Malta against each other on the 2nd June 2007 was one of the matches that is part of a European-wide match-fixing scandal. The trial is being held in the German city of Bochum.

The mastermind behind this betting ring is a Croat, Ante Sapina, and it is alleged that over €1.6 million were won via illegal betting on these fixed matches.

With regards to the Norway v Malta game, reports in the German media quoted Marijo Cvrtak, one of the accused. In his testimony he said that the game was manipulated and that he met at least three Maltese national team players in their Oslo hotel before the game. He went on to say that “I would have rather had a 5-0 result, but the players had already agreed between them”. On the eve of the match, Cvrtak allegedly also met another Maltese player in the player’s hotel room.

Malta eventually lost the game against Norway with a 4-0 scoreline. Norway scored in the 30th minute with another three goals coming in the last 17 minutes.

The formation was as follows: Mario Muscat, Ian Azzopardi, Brian Said, Stephen Wellman, Gilbert Agius, Michael Mifsud (Etienne Barbara ’83), Kevin Sammut (Ivan Woods ’46), George Mallia, Andre Schembri (Daniel Bogdanovic ’70), Kenneth Scicluna and Jamie Pace.

The Malta Football Association has issued a statement announcing that it has started its investigations. The statement said:
“In the light of information received by the Malta Football Association in relation to the trial presently being held in Bochum, Germany, regarding match-fixing allegations against Ante Sapina, Marijo Cvrtak and M. Dragan, and wherein mention was made of the qualification match Norway vs Malta, played on the 2nd June, 2007, in Oslo, Norway, the Association hereby notifies that the necessary investigative procedures have been initiated. The Malta Football Association shall communicate further information at the opportune time.”
