The match was scheduled at the Ta’ Qali Training Grounds but due to the heavy rainfall during the day it was transfered to the Centenary Stadium with the kick off time changed to 18:45Hrs. A small crowd braved the cold temperature and saw an entertaining match which ended with Scotland narrowly defeating the home side.

As early as the 3rd minute Malta could have forged ahead as Matteo Desira Buttigieg’s well placed 20 metre shot was tipped over in extremis to a corner. Again Malta was close after 20mins when from a cleared corner; Keith Tanti’s volley across the Scottish box was not met by Ryan Dalli by a whisker.

Scotland regained midfield and had two powerful shots going close one from a free kick by Islam Feruz and another shot from outside the area by Lewis Kidd.

Five minutes into the second half Lewis Kidd opened the score with a well taken volley which gave no chance to the Maltese keeper Kurt Rizzo. A perfect finish at the wrong time for the home team.

The Maltese tried in vain to penetrate the Scottish defence but the visitors managed a clean sheet as they defended well and moved on the counter to try and score another goal. Malta had at least three good chances in the dying minutes but Scotland always managed to clear the danger.

We caught up with the under 19 national team coach Michael Molzhan after the match “A very fine performance indeed yet I feel we were unfortunate to suffer a narrow defeat again. The players improved in all areas technically, tactically, and even physically. I wanted to play very aggressive and try to win this game at all costs but we had to suffer this goal which was a brilliant execution. Unfortunately we could not score one of the last three chances in the match to get back into the game. All in all I am very happy to work with this group of boys and I believe they can produce some good performances in the future.”
