The Malta Triathlon Federation is currently working in collaboration with the European Triathlon Union (ETU) and the Kunsill Malti Ghall-Isport (KMS) to start off the Youth Triathlon Academy.  This is a project which has long been in the plans of Triathlon Malta and we are finally about to realise it.

For those who do not have a background of Triathlon, this is a sport that combines swimming, cycling and running in one event.  It was first started in the US around 1978, it was introduced to Malta in 1988. In 2000 it was included in the Olympic Games programme.
The youth academy programme will be part of the KMS summer programme starting on the 15th July.  The Triathlon programme will consist of 3 sessions a week for a total of 10 weeks and will be held at Kirkop Sports Complex on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7.30pm till 8.30pm.  There could be a possibility of extending this time bracket if more children apply.  The age group targeted is between 9 years and 16 years.
Team members are introduced to the sport, trained by a professional coaching staff that is committed to developing the whole athlete to include character development, sportsmanship, respect for others and becoming students of the sport of triathlon. Current national triathlon coach & 10-time national champion Dermot Galea will be co-ordinating the whole training programme.
The main targets of this youth triathlon academy are:
1. To encourage youth to take up the sport of triathlon and build camaraderie among our youths
2. To increase mass participation in the sport of triathlon
3. To develop future champions
4. To educate our youths about a healthy & active lifestyle.
