The International Handball Federation will be organising the first competition for emerging nations
in Kosovo between the 17th and the 29th of June. The Maltese national team will be participating in
such a competition for the first time. Most participating countries are European, while other
continents will be represented by China, Uruguay, Australia and Cameroon. The competition will
see teams who are emerging in international handball as well as more established nations like
Bosnia and Herzegovina who as recently as January featured in the world championships held in

Malta was drawn to play in group C, with all matches being played in the in the city of Gjokova.
The team’s first match will be against China and though handball in the asian country is not as
popular as other sports, they are fielding a very strong team. Moldova, favourites of winning the
group, will be our second opponents, while the third match sees Malta take on Ireland. Our
national team will have to wait to know who they will face in the second round as these depend on
the group standings..

For the last 2 months, under the guidance of head coach Joseph Tanti and coach Ian Psaila, the
players have been preparing well and no stone was left unturned by the Maltese association to
ensure the team does well in this competition. The team is aiming to give a good account of itself
and to represent their native country the best they can. The delegation will consist of the coaches
together with physiotherapist Jade Portelli and 14 players.

The selected players are Philip Mifsud,Kurt Bugeja, Alex DiPilato, Damian Gargano (Aloysians), Mauro Camilleri Darmanin, Maurice Meli, Alan Portelli (La Salle), Luke Zammit, Jeremy Fenech, James Rausi (Kavallieri), Clinton
Mifsud, Roberto Lagana (Phoenix), Daniel Tanti and Aidan Tanti (Luxol).
