Malta Men’s National hockey team to participate in EuroHockey Nations Championships III

National hockey coach Pieter Bregman has selected the final squad to participate in the EHF Championships III being held in Sveti Ivan Zelina,  Croatia.

The tournament provides a great opportunity to monitor the progress achieved under the guidance of Bregman.  The players have in fact been preparing rigorously for the last 8 months.

A tough physical programme was followed to ensure that players will be able to cope with the difficult schedule they will have to endure.

The other countries participating in these Championships include Italy, Slovakia, Belarus, Lithuania, Turkey and Croatia.  Italy and Belarus are the top seeds and favourites to make it through to Championship II in the week long tournament.  Malta, in Group B, open their commitments against the hosts Croatia on Sunday 30th July.  Malta has encountered Croatia before, the last time being way back in 1999 in the Mediterranean Cup, when the Croats had won the encounter 5-2.  Malta will then meet Lithuania on August 1, a nation which Malta played against twice only 2 years ago. Hopefully Malta will be able to reverse the result of those games as Malta had lost narrowly.  Malta will then play against Belarus on August 2.

Depending on the results, Malta will then be playing in the semi-finals or playoffs to determine their final position.  No doubt, it will be a strong competition but with the preparation they have had, the local team will be looking forward to a positive result.

The players selected to represent Malta are

Goal keepers – Ramon Chircop and Emile Borg,
Defenders – Joseph Cuschieri, Keith Scicluna, Lukas Plaehn, Juan Sarcia, Ryan George
Midfielders – Luke Brincat, Mark Camilleri (captain), Silas Plaehn, Ryan Dalli, Zach Degiovanni,  Keith Calleja
Strikers – Thomas Degiovanni, John Williams, Steve Portelli, Shaun Grima
