Malta moves up to 49th place in the World

No it is not football! It’s the IRB World Rankings as on the 26  April 2010 and we are talking about rugby. Since the national rugby team’s latest win last Saturday which Malta achieved at home against Latvia, the team managed to climb up two places from 51st position.

Action from last weekend's match against Latvia

The loss to Netherlands (ranked 33rd in the world) slightly hampered the ranking, but the Dutch, who are a known force in rugby meritedly won the group. In that match that was played last week in Amsterdam,  the “oranje” started the game brilliantly and achieved their win in the first half. Malta was shocked, and although we dominated the second half we could not force any points finishing 19-0.

Last Saturday it was a different story as the Maltese ripped through the Latvian defence, dictating play and winning convincingly. In this season’s campaign, Malta won four matches from eight and consolidated its place in the Division 2B with Coach Damian Neill keeping his promise to introduce more local players in the National team without jeopardising the play and points at stake. This is excellent news for Maltese rugby as we see more local-grown players making it to international levels.

Well done to the boys with the eight pointed cross! Compared to the 158th FIFA ranking in football, this is money well spent. It’s a pity that no investor is willing to build a rugby stadium in Malta while we continue to invest heavily in football.
