Malta played its opening Euro Group A qualifier match in Istanbul against the mighty Spain and lost 26- 2.

The goals for Malta were scored by John Soler and the results for each session were as follows: 1-7, 0-7, 1-5, 0-7.

In the third session, John Soler missed a penalty that awarded in Malta’s favour.

When contacted in Istanbul, the Maltese ASA delegation remarked that the National Water polo team was in a transitory phase. the team was missing two stalwarts, Jonathan Valletta and Josie Cachia, who have retired and Steve Camilleri, who was part of the Maltese team which had finished in the sixth place in the Euro B tournament last September. This European tournament should help national coach Sergio Afric to give the appropriate exposure and experience to the new players within the National team.

The Maltese played against the professional national water polo team of Spain which is one of the favourites for winning the Championships as they are one of the top nations in the game. In fact over the years, they had various successes on an international level and reached podium level in various Olympic Games. Their latest success was the third place in the World Water polo Championships held in Melbourne in 2007.

The other nations in Group A together with Malta are Slovakia and host country Turkey. Malta will be playing against Turkey tomorrow at 5.30pm and against Slovakia on Sunday at 10am.
