Malta Junior Open Tennis Championships

Over 60 junior tennis players took part in the San Michel Malta Junior Open Tennis Championships, at the Marsa Sports Club. The Championships were sanctioned by the Malta Tennis Federation and organised by the Tennis Section of the Marsa Sports Club. The Open attracts up and rising tennis players aged 8 to 16, who over a 1 week play on a knockout basis to determine the winners in both boys’ and girls’ categories.

The finals were played on Saturday, 14th crowned champion in 2 categories: Under 16 Boys champion for the first time following a breathtaking game of very long rallies with runner up Zach Ciappara, and Under 14 Boys champion after beating runner up young and talented Benjamin Farrugia.

In the other boys categories, Liam Delicata was declared Under 12 champion after facing runner up Thomas Griscti in the final.

In the Girls events, an excellent performance by Katrina Sammut saw her defeat a highly promising Francesca Curmi to become the Under 14 champion for 2013. Francesca Curmi won the Girls Under 12 category following a win over Martina Demanuele.

Sasha Mamo won the Under 10 Boys singles following a win over another very promising player, Alex Degabriele.

The Girls Under 10 Singles was won by the upcoming player Emma Mallia following a win over runner up Maja Glumac. These two young players surprised everyone with their ability on court at such a young age.

The performance level during this tournament turned out to be very high with these amazing young and talented players showing strong signs of physical, technical and tactical knowledge of the game which will promise well for Malta on the international tennis scene.

Dr David Farrugia Sacco, President of the Malta Tennis Federation and Karen Scicluna Calleja on behalf of Farsons, presented the trophies to the winners. Present were members of the MSC Tennis Section Committee.
