Some of kendo’s highest level teachers are once again coming to Malta. No less than three eighth dan, one seventh dan from Japan and two seventh dan instructors from the United Kingdom will be as the Malta Kendo Federation proudly hosts the Kodokan International Kendo Seminar, led by Masatake Sumi sensei, eighth dan hanshi, and hosted by the Maltese Kendo Federation.

This year’s seminar stretches across the 1st to the 4th of September with high level instruction covering kata practiced with bokken or oak practice swords and shinai keiko (practice) with the traditional bamboo sword and protective armour, as well as a grading for the seminar participants. One of the features of this year’s seminar will be on teaching kendo for women, Iwao sensei, on ladies day.

The seminar is open to the public at the University Sports Hall to come and watch, with a free come and try session on Saturday the 3rd between 11 and 12 noon. Just turn up in comfortable clothing and learn from top Japanese instructors just what kendo is. The final day of the seminar, Sunday the 4th, is no exception, with the afternoon session devoted to the first ever Malta International Taikai (competition) with some fast paced frenetic action.

Further information can be obtained on the MKF’s website  www.kendomalta.org or the Kodokan website www.kodokankendo.org.
