Leeds Akkies have arrived in Malta ahead of their mens and ladies teams taking on Maltese Selections this Saturday evening at Pembroke’s Melita FC.

The mens fixture, will pit a largely new Maltese residents team against a well drilled Akkies team that played in the Yorkshire West League this season, for the inaugural Oliver Reed Memorial Shield.

The club’s reserve grade team finished runners up for the second consecutive season and its ladies team were the 2011 RLC Plate Winners.

Akkies Tour Manager Carl Brown says “We’re looking forward to our mens and ladies teams taking on international opposition, a unique opportunity for most of our players, and hopefully some sunshine on our Mediterranean visit”

The visitors main strike weapons include GB Pioneers and Yorkshire Students representative player James Howard and former Irish Student Exiles star Ste Cranny, but Malta coach Anthony Micallef is hoping to field seven of his European Shield team that beat Norway by 40 points last month.

“I’ll be using a largely new team for this XIII’s fixture, a match that will allow me to play a number of new Gozitan players for the first time at this level. There are also some new local faces and we have the Grima brothers Liam and Dom joining us from England” said Micallef.

The Grima’s made their national team debut against Germany in July.

Englishwoman Rose Nash will officiate the mens fixture while Nadia Gosney will take charge of the ladies match beforehand in an all ladies referee affair ahead of MRL match officials courses to be delivered in Malta next month.
