Italian driver Fabio Spatafora, who has been a resident of Malta for different periods of time during the past few years, will be participating at Monza at the wheel of a Chevrolet SS (sport sedan) with a competition licence issued by the Malta Motorsport Federation.

As a result, the official Entry List displays ‘Malta’ as the driver’s ‘country’. NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) is the most popular form of racing in the United States – 75 million racing fans, and its European series is gaining a lot of popularity. This is a category of racing that Malta could host if and when it will have a modest racing circuit.

The NASCAR Whelen Euro Series is covered by international TV broadcasting reaching 50 million households in 40 countries around the world. Firms and businesses who wish to promote their products or services at Monza could make use of Fabio’s racing Chevrolet for a small sponsorship fee.

Fabio has been recruited by French team Scorpus Racing for Monza because the Italian driver is familiar with this fast racing circuit. The Chevrolet SS will be driven 2 times in the Elite races during the weekend – on Saturday at 12.10 pm and on Sunday at 10.45 am, each race lasting 30 minutes. It will be driven another 2 times by Sailesh Bolisetti of India in the ‘Open’ category.

A total of 50 racing drivers will be taking part in two separate groups – 25 in the Elite division and 25 in the Open division. In the Elite class there are racing drivers from 6 other European countries in addition to Malta, that is from France, Italy, Luxembourg,Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

In the Open category, there are drivers from 8 different countries, namely Australia,Belgium, Brazil, France, India, Italy, the Philippines and Switzerland. The most famous Elite driver taking part at Monza is no doubt Max Papis who has raced in Formula 1, Le Mans and Champ in the US.

The V8 400hp Chevrolet SS will be racing against 16 other Chevrolet SS or Camaro racing cars, 5 Ford Mustang, 2 Toyota Camry, and a Dodge Challenger.

The first 3 rounds of the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series were held at Nogaro and Dijon in France, and at Brands Hatch in the UK. After the semi-finals in Monza, the Final races will be held at Le Mans in France on 12 and 13 October. The races at Monza will no doubt be as spectacular as any other.

Malta was never represented at this level of auto racing and the Maltese fans will be watching and supporting Fabio at Monza hoping that he will carry the Maltese flag to a respectable finishing position.
