In the absence of a national scheme of awards to recognize more persons involved in motor sport events in Malta, and in particular speed events, or of Maltese drivers who participate successfully in foreign events, a new evolving community on the Facebook social network called Malta & Auto Racing is launching its Malta Auto Racing Awards of the Year 2011.

This scheme is an open, transparent and inclusive system that can be easily checked online within certain parameters. This award scheme is not meant to substitute the awards to the winners in the championships promoted by the various motor sport clubs and associations in Malta. It is meant to supplement such awards, and those of journalists, with the participation of the race fans themselves.

A total of 6 awards are being introduced. These are the:

Malta Auto Racing Car of the Year 2011

Malta Auto Racing Driver of the Year 2011

Malta Auto Racing Official of the Year 2011

Malta Auto Racing Kart Driver of the Year 2011

Malta Auto Racing Technical Award of the Year 2011

Malta Auto Racing Junior Driver of the Year 2011 (16 and under)

In the first award, the competition car or auto racing vehicle that has caught the imagination of the motor sport followers and which is found to be the most popular among race fans and spectators will be considered the winner for the year 2011.  To be eligible the car must have been raced in one of the motor sport disciplines promoted in Malta, or raced abroad by a Maltese driver during 2011. Nominations by at least 5 enthusiasts, in addition to the acceptance of the owner/entrant of the car (six in all) will be received by no later than Tuesday, January 10. The same date applies to the other nominations. The nomination may be posted on the Malta & Auto Racing page together with a photo of the car.

Voting represented by the number of “like(s)” posted on the Malta Auto Racing page by the racing fans and the general public for each of the cars nominated will determine the winner. Each person may only vote once for any car. Multiple votes by the same person for the same car will be ignored. Voting will be open from 0.00 hrs on Wednesday, January 11, to 11.59 hrs on Tuesday, January 17 (Malta time). Votes, or “likes” posted after this time frame will be ignored.

For the Driver of the Year Award, a similar system will be used, but the 5 persons who submit the nomination must include at least one other driver who competes in a similar discipline or another discipline. The driver nominated must accept the nomination, and a passport photo or a photo in racing gear may be posted on the Malta & Auto Racing page. At least one of the 5 persons who support the nomination must have taken part in a speed event in Malta or abroad during 2011. A nomination may be based on the performance of the driver, his sporting spirit, or any other positive trait related to auto racing. Voting will be open to race fans and the general public in the same way and during the same period as for the Car of the Year.

For the Official of the Year Award, 3 nominations in addition to the acceptance of the official nominated will be needed.  At least one person among the 3 persons nominating an official need to have served on the committee of the same club or association, or of another club or association, and he needs to indicate on which committee he has served during the year. In this particular case a nomination need not be based on the service or contribution provided solely during 2011, but could also take into account several or a number of years in addition to 2011. A photo of the official nominated may be posted, and voting will be open as in the other awards.

For the Kart Driver of the Year, the same system as that of the Driver of the Year will be used but in this case a nomination from 3 persons is enough, including at least one other karting driver, in addition to the acceptance of the karting driver nominated. The nomination of the karting driver must be based on the driver’s participation in karting in Malta or abroad, and could reflect the performance, or the sporting spirit or some other positive trait. A photo of the kart driver nominated may be posted. Voting will be open as in the other awards.

The nomination for the Technical Award must be supported by 3 persons involved in speed events or racing teams. For this award an engineer, mechanic, technician, tuner, or owner of a garage or technical workshop in Malta involved in the preparation of an auto racing vehicle may be nominated. The person concerned needs to accept the nomination, and a photo may be posted. The persons submitting the nomination need to indicate their involvement in the sport. This award is meant to recognize the contribution of one of those who are less visible in the sport but whose work is very important. Such contribution supplements the efforts of the drivers and the officials. Voting will be open as in the other awards.

In the case of the final award, namely for the Junior Driver of the Year (16 and under), the nomination must be submitted by at least two persons, including a parent of the Junior Driver who must not have been older than 16 years of age on 31 December 2011. A photo of the Junior Driver may be posted. The introduction of this award is meant as an encouragement to a promising young driver and his/her parents. It is also meant as a sign of recognition of the assistance of the Malta Sport Council to the island’s auto racing champions of tomorrow. The nomination may be based on performance, sportsmanship, or sporting effort or participation. Nominations of young drivers of Maltese descent who live abroad and who are within this age bracket and are participating in speed events may also be nominated. Voting will be open as in the other awards.

For this year, these awards are being introduced as an honours list, and a certificate of appreciation may be awarded to the winners. A number of sponsors have been approached to support these awards, and if there are any sponsors who are interested in supporting these awards, they may indicate such interest on the Malta & Auto Racing page, and they will be contacted.
