Luxol 59 – Hibs Medsea 43
(14-12)(14-12)(21-14)(10-5)

Luxol huma c-champions il-ġodda tal-basketball femminili. Wara snin ta’ dominanza mit-teams ta’ Hibs, Depiro u mill-ġdid Hibs fl-aħħar snin, it-team ta’ Luxol taħt it-tmexxija ta’ Val Drury rebħu l-kampjonat. Dan il-kampjonat huwa t-tmien wieħed fl-istorja ta’ Luxol u wasal wara nuqqas ta’ 19-il sena. Kampjonat li wasal ukoll wara diversi snin li matulhom Luxol rebħu diversi unuri fil-kategoriji tal-juniors u ħafna mill-players tac-champions il-ġodda ilhim għal ħafna snin jimmilitaw f’dan il-club.

Matul il-ġimgħa Hibs tilfu wkoll lil Elena Cassar fil-waqt li Luxol kienu bil-formazzjoni tipika tagħhom. Hibs bdew il-partita bi three pointer ta’ Lucienne Bezzina pero r-risposta ta’ Luxol kienet immedjata b’run ta’ 11-0 fosthom trippli ta’ Emma Moore u Becky Naudi. Hibs reġgħu wieġbu bi break ta’ 9-0 inluża trippla oħra ta’ Bezzina pero Beverlee Zammit ukoll għamlet three pointer biex il-l-ewwel sessjoni għalqet bil-Luxol fuq quddiem 14-12. Fit-tieni sessjoni Luxol kabbru l-vantaġġ bil-freethrows ta’ Steffi De Martino pero kienu l-Hibs li reġgħu ħadu l-vantaġġ wara punti minn Doreen Micallef. Il-vantaġġ kompla jinbidel minn naħa għal oħra u wara li Bezzina mill-ġdid bi trippla ħalliet lil Hibs fuq quddiem, baskets minn Mandi Sciortino u trippla ta’ Zammit raw lil Luxol jidħlu jistrieħu 28-24 minn fuq.

Fit-tielet sessjoni l-partita nbidlet hekk kif Hibs qalbu d-difiża tagħhom u hawn dehret iktar De Martino li b’żewġ trippli tagħha tat vantaġġ ta’ 8 punti lil Luxol 42-34. Minkejja li Hibs irrispondew, Luxol baqgħu jiddettaw il-logħob bil-punti tagħhom jinqasmu bejn diversi players u huma bdew l-aħħar sessjoni 49-38 minn fuq. Fir-raba’ perjodu Hibs reġgħu qalbu d-difiża pero d-dannu kien sar u l-vantaġġ ta’ Luxol baqa’ konsistenti anke grazzi għat-tieni trippla ta’ Moore li fetħitilhom distakk ta’ 12-il punt 52-40. Issa Luxol bdew jiċċelebraw hekk kif bdew iżommu l-pussess tal-ballun biex ħarġu rebbieħa 59-43. Fost il-ferħ tal-players, diriġenti u partitarji numerużi, l-president tal-MBA il-Maġistrat Antonio Mizzi ppreżenta t-trofew ta’ champions lil captain ta’ Luxol Mandi Sciortino.

Dear Stephen , Jien mhux dikma tinzillijx ! li Siggiewi qatt xi darba kellom jitilfu ma Loyola! Luxol have experienced players and experienced coach and ae capable of having a good game. With regads to last sunday`s game , can anyone recall a team of scoring 88 points and loosing ! and having 13 three pointers with avery good percentage! Siggiewi must admit it they got into this situation themselves. Loosing to a weak team like Loyola. And now trying to blame it on Luxol. Come on. Dear Joe Borg , I dont have hearing problems anzi Siggiewi `s president was granted to little punishment ! and with him not there shouting at refs andnot paying his players, Siggiewi lost a lot of games and thats a fact ! Joe Borg Reply:

You utter words of wisdom. Though think. Me not.
As for me, I do not know who was paid or not. But please do not talk about players not being paid, or the league would end up with zero teams. And that is a fact too.
If Luxol beating Athleta/Pembroke (or whatever the name is as we lost count of the name changes over the years – and that is a fact too) incidentally twice in a row, just in time to make the final, doesn´t mean anything to you, and you have the right for your opinion, you shouldn´t justify your argument by saying that Siggiewi lost to Loyola. Doesn´t ring well and only implies that you agree with the argument.
How many more facts there are that you do not know about in basketball. Oh and once again pregame meals are very important, I agree. And a drop of wine helps the digestion.
Oh and as for me, it doesn´t bother me a single dime who wins or loses. Better watching a second division game.
And that is not only a fact but also reality.

    Nathan Reply:

With regards to which is better, 1st division or 2nd division, that it up to everyone’s individual opinion. From the number of wins Athleta had throughout the season they made sure they were going to make the finals, never depending on anyone else. With regards to Luxol, they had a slight opportunity and went for it without depending on anyone. Luxol kept their heads up, never complaining about which team was winning or losing.
After all said and done the new champions is going to be either Athelta or Luxol, not Siggiewi. And if Siggiewi are still blaming Athleta’s loss for not getting into the final then they don’t deserve to get into the final, PERIOD.
You can’t blame a coach who is guaranteed a position in the finals to rest his key players.

    Joe Borg Reply:

Thanks for the info. So that’s what it was. Players needed – rest. Exactly what I usually do after a nice meal and a bottle of wine.

naqbel mijak hawn !! min irid ikun vera CHAMPION jilghab kontra ic-champions fil-finals u mhux ghamlu minn kollox biex jaqilaw lis-siggiewi ! last sunday the game between Athleta and Luxol was a disgrace!!

    Karl Reply:

I am a basketball fan , and i am regularly at Ta` Qali . I side with a small team but i love the game. I am into things more than others it seems. Siggiewi didnt make it to the finals cause Althleta lost to Luxol. Siggiwei were beaten twice by Athleta themselves in the championship pool. We should mention that Siggiewi didnt make the finals cause they lost to LUXOL and LOYOLA. And one of their key players didnt get paid , LEE ROSS and he decided that he will not go to the games before he gets paid. That was a very nice gesture for his team mates and for his club and supporters. Also Siggiwei club president was suspended for a month after Siggiewi won the Louis Borg Cup cause he was shouting to the refs and rumors were heard that he even went in their dressing room at half time. ……….. So as it seems all is their fault. Luxol have a stong team but it will be very hard for them to win, but they made it there and they must have their credit. I really dont think it was a disgrace , Last sunday`s was a high scoring game from both teams and anyone could have won.

    [Reply]

    Nathan Reply:

    Very well said Karl.
A team should never depend on opposing teams winning or losing in order to get qualified, instead should focus their efforts and energy into building team chemistry and winning games. Some Siggiewi players are blaming their losing season on Athleta while they forget that they are the ones who lost to Luxol twice and Loyola, while they do not understand that if they won any of those game they wouldn’t be in the situation they are in.
Siggiewi players, Peter Shoults and John Doughty, showed up at last Sundays game at T’Qali between Athleta and Luxol. During half time and at the end of the game both these players started offending the Athleta players from VIP section with words I will not mention on a public blog.
I guess some Siggiewi players don’t want to be men and put the blame were it should be … on themselves!!

    [Reply]

    Joe Borg Reply:

Is there more than one court in Ta´Qali ? Seems like it. Amazing. Seems like an urgent annex to Mater Dei Hospital is required at Ta´ Qali. One for eye sight and one for hearing problems.
Oh and a restaurant too. That way if someone wants to take their team for lunch before a game (pregame lunch ha ha ha ha), they won´t have to travel far after. Ooops excuse me, I purped the wine I drank.
    Quo Vadis basketball ?

The benefit of being in the driving seat is that you can rest your key players. That’s what smart coaches do!
What is really a disgrace is Siggiewi losing to Loyola which clearly showed that Siggiewi do not deserve to even be in the final.

I am a web developer and offered multiple times to take care of the MBA website for a very reasonable price, however the MBA in the past was more interested in keeping the site under the supervision internally.
The website was re-designed more than a year ago, and since then and has been updated once. Such a website should be updated weekly with the latest results, photos, videos, and a forum community where anyone can share their opinions.
Lets just hope that the new appointed members in the MBA will realise the importance of internet now-a-days!

    Adrian Mifsud Reply:

Unfortunately you are not correct in your statements. I have taken the responsibility of updating the web site as much as I can since last October ie after the web site was redeveloped. Since then, the site has been updated with – Rules and regulations, forms, team lists but even more importantly on a daily basis with all game results and team classifications. Recently we have also started uploading the scoresheet for every game. I agree with you that there still is a great deal more that can be done and hopefully we will find additional assistance and not depend on clubs providing us with images. A interesting statistic is that the MBA site has gone from a completely dead site to a site that gets in excess of 100 visits/day. I am sure that with further enhancements to the current site we will get even more visits/day.

    Stephen Reply:

You are correct. The MBA website was unaccessible all season last year. This year we have seen a great improvement

    [Reply]

    Adrian Baldacchino Reply:

I have to agree the MBA website has improved a lot in the past year with scores and tables updated more often, what I would suggest is for the MBA to setup an official Facebook page as well it would help the local basketball profile since almost anyone who’s on internet is on Facebook these days.

    Ruben Baldacchino Reply:

I have a group Malta Basketball on facebook. If anyone from the association approaches me to take it over, I’m willing to pass it on. My aim was and is still to create more promotion on basketball in Malta and help to get more kids in the game locally.

    Ali Reply:

Nathan the MBA website this year was updated regularly. How come you make a statement like that which it is not true? Maybe you did not even bothered to enter the website once because if never this year were a lot of game changes and they were updated regularly.

    [Reply]

    Ruben Baldacchino Reply:

The MBA website has improved a lot when you compare it to the previous years. There is always room for improvement, but still thumbs up for the work done. We can’t always complain, an improvement was done, nobody can deny that. Prosit Adrian, and keep up the good work.

One on the bench and the another jumping jack in the stands with only one thing in mind……..to pay back Hibs for his recent bad experience with the said Club. Bad luck Ronnie, money down the drain. Bad investment in your aging team. Time to look for young talent from within and not steal players from one Club and another. Next year get your act in order and play the Kubana.

    @Joe Mizzi

Hibs are investing in their nursery and they are doing well in all categories. If you only had some time to spare instead of spreading loving words towards Ronnie, you could have easily seen that Hibs are always ranked with the top teams in all categories.

Secondly if a player moves to another club, it’s not stealing. Every player can decide to move where he/she feels more comfortable to play. If a player leaves a club, it’s his/her choice. Don’t blame the club that they joined. Clubs should treat their nursery players better, like that they won’t leave their club. And not make rules to make it impossible for players to move, and push them to an early retirement because of their unhappiness with their clubs. Think about it….
