With the Triathlon season still in its initial stages, triathlete Graham Borg has already shown his good form with a handful of promising international results. Last October, Borg was able to qualify for the Ironman 70.3 World Championships being held later on this year in Sunshine Coast, Australia.

Borg’s first overseas racing commitment was the Triathlon Sprint di Marzamemi, the second race forming part of the Sicily Triathlon Series held on the 10th of April, same race he had an overall win last year.  Despite this being a shorter race than what the athlete has been focusing on, Borg showed his strength in all three disciplines and came home in 1st in his category and 5th place overall.

Perhaps a bigger feat for the local triathlete was his performance on the 22nd of April at the Trapaniman 113k, a middle distance triathlon consisting of a 1.9km swim, a 90km cycle and a 21km run. This race takes place annually and over the years has attracted some big names; this year in fact saw the likes of professional triathlete Massimo Cigana participate and win the race.  Fresh from his strong performance in Marzamemi, Borg got off to a strong start in the swim and was one of the first athletes to exit the waters, 3 minutes ahead of Cigana. Despite strong winds on the bike course, he continued to show strength and went on to Win 1st place in his age group as well as place 5th overall.  He was in fact the first Maltese to cross the finish line in a time of 4 hours and 17 minutes with a personal best time in the middle distance triathlon.

“I am absolutely thrilled with how things are going so far. Although I have been consistent in my training throughout winter, I was not expecting to be performing so soon into the season.  My A race this year will be the Ironman 70.3 World Championships and despite being in the middle of heavy training, these results are all good signs” said Borg.

The local triathlete has a busy calendar ahead with his next big commitment being on the 30th of July at the Ironman 70.3 in Budapest.  Just a month before the world championships, this will be an ideal race to test his strengths as well as sharpen up. Last year Borg secured 2nd place in his age group in the 5150 Triathlon in Budapest, a side event held in line with the 70.3. This year he is hoping to repeat his strong performance in the longer distance.

Graham Borg is supported by On, PowerBar, MZ Investments and Cfragrances Perfumes; it is thanks to these companies that he is able to race abroad.
