Local Gymnasts have been working very hard over the past few months! Apart from attending training sessions, they have been subject to assessment and selection in order to find out who has the potential to be part of the Women Artistic Gymnastics team representing Malta in the next GSSE taking place in Luxembourg in 2013.

The first international event sanctioned by the Malta Gymnastics Federation (MGF) and supported by the Malta Olympic Committee (MOC) is the Sicilian International Competition which took place on 1st December 2012. The selected team consisted of Kirsty Caruana, Corene Gatt, Jessica Worley and Adreana Zammit who competed in the senior category as well as Claire Azzopardi, Suzanne Buttigieg, Hannah Formosa, Sana Grillo and Paula Hampton who took part in the junior category.

The competition was held at the Regional Sports School Complex in Ragusa where the gymnasium is fully equipped for both Men and Women Artistic Gymnastics competitions. The event was remarkably well organized – from the opening ceremony, throughout the warm up and the routines on all events, till the award ceremony. The competing gymnasts where evaluated and scored by International Judges.

The MGF is proud to announce that the Maltese Senior Team won a total of 5 gold, 3 silver and 5 bronze medals: Kirsty came 1st in all 4 events as well as AA, Adreana came 2nd on Floor, Vault and AA, and 3rd on Bars, while Corene came 3rd on Floor, Vault, Beam and AA. On the other hand, the Maltese Junior Team won a total of 1 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze medals: Sana won gold on Floor, and silver on Bars and AA, Suzanne came 2nd on Vault and Beam and 3rd on AA, Claire won silver on Floor, Hannah came 3rd on Bars and Paula came 3rd on Vault.

The difficulty level of the Sicilian gymnasts and the Maltese gymnasts is very similar. Both teams have gained a constructive physical and psychological experience through this International Competition.  The Sicilian organizer received positive feedback and has thus already expressed an interest in organizing another similar event, involving more regions and nations, in 2013.

Meanwhile, the MGF is at the moment organizing the National Championship on the 21st and 22nd December 2012 with the aim to select the 2013 Gymnastics National team. In addition to the FIG category, the event will also include age groups categories for gymnasts at a lower difficulty level.
