Light southerly winds characterized the MBS St. Peter’s sailing RegattaThursday, August 11, 2011, 18:00
Typical summer weather conditions characterized this year’s edition of the MBS St. Peter’s Regatta. An event organized by the Birżebbuġa Sailing Club held annually over first weekend of August.
A sizeable number of sailors coming from both the Birżebbuġa Sailing Club and Malta Young Sailors Club of St. Paul’s Bay formed not less than six boat classes who battled it out in six races held in light southerly wind conditions where boat handling finesse and being first in picking the right wind shifts and minute winds puffs separated the winners from the rest of the thirty four strong boat fleet.
The Optimist sailors were divided in three categories. Alex Esposito finished in first place in the Open Category followed by Francesca Zammit in second place whilst Zackary Zammit finished in third.
The top sailor in the Optimist Cadet Division was Sean Valentino ahead of Matthew Micallef and Matthew Bugeja whilst Lacey Aquilina, Luke Spiteri & Benjamin Ciantar participated in the Novice beginner division.
In the RS Feva youth double handed class only two overall points separated the first two positions. Team Mattea Ciantar and Anthony Kahzmi were confirmed as class winners only after race six on Sunday. Team Andrew and Micela Mifsud came in second whilst Jonathan Sammut and Claudia Bugeja come in third place.
Pierre Mifsud / David Saliba and Karl Valentino showed absolute dominance in the Miracle double handed class when they finished with a clean sheet of six first placings in six races. The teams Joe Morana / Debbie Bugeja and Michael Gauci / Inge’ Mule` Stagno followed in second and third places respectively.
In the Overall Handicap Class Mario Aquilina made a great comeback on the local competitive dinghy sailing scene when he finished in first place closely followed by Alfred Fenech in second place whilst once again miracle class boat skippered by Pierre Mifsud and crewed by David Saliba and Karl Valentino managed to cling the third place in this class as well thus confirming the brillant form this team is presently in.
The regatta was sponsored by the Malta Business School, where managing director Mr. Lorenzo Mule` Stagno presented trophies to all the winners during the prize-giving ceremony which rounded off yet another successful sailing weekend at the BSC clubhouse in Wied il-Buni Birżebbuġa.
