Leaders gear up for final race

Championship leaders Neil Agius and Hannah Pace registered the best finishing times of the season in the fifth race of the Vileda Birkirkara St Joseph Open Water Swimming Championships, held last Wednesday at Salina.

In the Males’ race, Neil Agius had only the clock to beat in his effort to swim the 2 kilometres in under 26 minutes. This he achieved with time to spare, finishing the race in 25 minutes, 20 seconds. Roberto Demicoli finished second in 28 minutes, 12 seconds,and Gilbert Bartolo finished third in 28 minutes, 14 seconds. Going into the final race, Agius is leading the overall classification with a time of one hour, 45 minutes, 49 seconds, in front of Demicoli (1:55:09) and Keith Galea (1:55:32).

In this fifth race of the championships Females’ leader Hannah Pace opened an insurmountable gap at the top of the table, with a superb performance, winning the race in 28 minutes, 19 seconds to accumulate a time of one hour, 55 minutes, 56 seconds.

Michelle Vella Wood finished second in 32 minutes, 9 seconds, and Marian Belsten finished third in 32 minutes, 24 seconds.

The final race of these championships will be held on Wednesday, 7th August at Salina,starting at 5:00 p.m. This final race is the only one held on a distance of 4 kilometres,which is compulsory for the overall classification. The Vileda Birkirkara St. Joseph Open Water Swimming Championships are held under the auspices of the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta.
