A Press Conference was held at the Hibernians Basketball Club, Corradino, to launch the start of another year of training programmes organized by the Hibernians Nursery.  Hibs Club President, Charles Deguara, emphasized the excellent relationship between the Club, which has during the last thirty years won an impressive number of honours in the local basketball scene, and the Nursery, which thanks to the hard work of its administration and coaches, has established itself as one of the most organized in Malta.  He said that the Nursery was lucky that it could make use of the Club’s excellent facilities at Corradino – together with the highly qualified and extremely dedicated coaches, this ensured that the youngsters attending could develop their athletic and physical attributes.  He also thanked Dr David Attard, Club Committee member, whose expertise and knowledge in sports medicine is surely second to none. Charles Deguara finished his intervention by announcing that this year the Nursery had also acquired the services of two former professional Italian players, Silvia Gambino and FabrizioMariani, who used to play for Italy’s National Youth Team.

In his intervention, Anthony Cassar, Nursery Head Coach and Administrator, thanked the dedicated Coaches who worked so hard to ensure the continued development of the youngsters attending and playing for the Nursery, both in terms of physical, technical and educational development.  He thanked the Club administration for the continued collaboration, emphasizing that at a young age, say 8 – 12 years, the Coaches work mainly on fundamentals of sport (such as agility, balance & coordination)  without emphasis on the specifics of the game – through various fun-based activities. The Nursery would like to promote a balanced motor and cognitive development in children which should be individually-based.  As they grow older, they are introduced to more specific concepts of the game in accordance with standard teaching practice. He also made reference to the fact that a product of the Nursery, Kurt Cassar, is presently having a trial in Italy.

Finally, in a short address, FabrizioMariani, said he is extremely happy to be working with the Hibs Nursery whose dedication and enthusiasm really impressed him. He is more than willing to pass on to the youths attending the Nursery his knowledge and experience in the wonderful game of basketball.
