Launch of the First Malta Basketball Awards

Earlier this morning the Malta Basketball Association launched the first edition of the Malta Basketball Awards during a press conference in St. Julian’s. The press conference was addressed by Magistrate Antonio Mizzi President of the MBA and Colin Schembri coordinator of the event which will be held at Le Meridien Hotel and Spa on Saturday 25th September at 20.00. Mr. Frank Camilleri General Secretary of the association concluded this press conference.

 Magistrate Mizzi thanked the main sponsors of the event Detur and KDM Group of companies. He also thanked Colin Schembri for this initiative and announced that the show will be transmitted live on Malta Stars on Melita. Mr. Mizzi also said that a special award will be given to the men National team who won the bronze medal in San Marino in 1985 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary. MBA president said that this was the first medal won by Malta in the GSSE and was the beginning of a wonderful series of successes for Maltese Basketball.

Mr. Colin Schembri then announced that apart from the special award to the players who won the bronze medal in San Marino in 1985, there will be a total of 22 awards to be presented during the night. These are the best steals, best assists, best rebounder, best three point shooter and best scorer for the first division men, women and 2nd division men and the player of the year award.

This award will be awarded to senior men and women, under 20 and under 17 men and women. The awards will be awarded to winners by the 1985 players and MBA sponsors. He said that in case of the first awards, no voting was necessary since the statistics are collected from beginning of the season and the results are based on the final statistics at the end of the season. The event will be presented by Mirana Agius Silvio and Simon Farrugia. Luke Camilleri and Maria Bonett will be giving a helping hand during the night together with floor manager Pierre Cachia and director Diane Difesa. In conclusion, Frank Camilleri thanked again Colin Schembri and also Sandro Micallef for his contribution in the event. On a side note he mentioned that the MBA and MBRA just concluded a referees course with 32 attendees which was a very successful one.
