Launch of The European Week of Sports 2017

The European Week of Sports was launched today during a Press Conference held at the National Pool tal-Qroqq.   The European Week of Sport is a Europe-wide initiative of the European Commission, created to help address the issue of physical inactivity by encouraging the widest possible audience to be active. It inspires to make physical activity, as simple as it is, to become part of their lives.

SportMalta is the national coordinator of the European Week of Sport in Malta, where for the third consecutive year has been entrusted with the preparation of a vast and intense sports programme that meets everyone’s needs.

SportMalta as the local coordinator of this initiative, has partnered up with a multitude of associations, sports clubs, private entities, sponsors, NGOs and others and together prepared a programme aimed at all people through which they can  discover that activity to help them be physically active.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Sport and Voluntary Organisations, Clifton Grima stated, “Sport and regular physical activity are an important part of our daily lives as these indeed enhance our quality of life. Physical activity in particular, is associated with improved self-esteem. Research shows that this has a significant impact on our mental health and, in turn, our physical health. Surveys show that levels of physical inactivity in Malta and across Europe are on the increase, with a negative impact on people’s health and well-being, as well as on the economy. Sport and physical activity helps to keep us in shape so we can enjoy leisure activities and safely perform work and home chores. I encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to be active.”

On the other hand, the Chairman of SportMalta, Dr. Luciano Busuttil said that through SportMalta’s sport programmes the entity is contributing to introduce a sports culture in our country. He referred to the six months of Malta’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union and praised the work carried out by SportMalta emphasizing themes related to the sports field that were presented during the six months leadership. Dr. Busuttil concluded his message stating that sports is a right and thus should be accessible to all.

Karl Izzo, the Maltese ambassador of the European Week of Sport also intervened during the launch. Izzo is synonymous with the sports scene in Malta. He talked about his recent experience that convened in Brussels with ambassadors hailing from all member states and explained how all together they are working to boost a sports culture in their respective countries. The national coach of water polo ended his message by remarking that there is no age limit to physical activity and so it is never too late for anyone to commence. He invited the public to take the opportunity and join in this week by finding the activity that best suits their needs.

The organizers have presented a programme that encourages more people to participate and thus the message of SportMalta to become physically active is reaching more and more people especially those joining this initiative.

The official opening will be held on Saturday 23rd  September at Pretty Bay in Birżebbuġa with handball, golf, volleyball and soccer being a few amongst the many activities that will be taking place during the evening. The public is encouraged to attend and participate for free.

During the following week, other initiatives include football, table tennis, badminton, a sport activity in Gozo and others that will take place in several schools.

The European Sports Week will reach its climax with the closing ceremony on Sunday 24th September in Valletta where everyone is being invited to this celebration of physical activity.
