Malta players congratulating each other after winning their second full International match since the formation of the Malta National Futsal team

Malta Futsal registers second ever full International win, first infront of home crowd.

A last minute goal scored by Paola Downtown playmaker Xavier Saliba gave the Malta National Futsal team the first three points in the fourth International Malta Futsal Tournament in a 2-1 over Switzerland.

Malta led by Dutch coach Vic Hermans has with today’s win registered the second ever win in its recent Futsal history. The last and only win Malta had registered was against Palestine (3-1) in November of 2010 in an International friendly played in Libya.

Malta now leads the table of this 4th International Futsal Tournament since in the first match the other two participating nations UAE and Greece drew 1-1.

Switzerland had only seven players on their line up plus one reserve keeper since two of their team mates did not manage to make the trip to Malta on time. The Swiss went one goal up from the penalty spot as Salvatore Patera shot past Malta keeper Mifsud.

Malta’s typical and standard 1-2-1 formation proved mechanical as the boys in red managed to level the score by Kurt Bartolo of Todos FC on the 9th minute mark. Earlier Ibrahim Taryk (who just became father the night before) hit the low end of the goalpost after a personal action.

The match turned out to be a very balanced issue with either side having their respective chances to go ahead. Hermans utilized all his players except captain John Cutajar and reserve keeper Cain Agius.

Naxxar Motors’ keeper Matthew Mifsud performed yet again a brilliant game defending the Malta goals with some fine saves. A Notable absence was that of Glenn Bonello who did not feature in the team sheet.

The second half resulted again in a balanced encounter with some though tackles committed by each side. In the dying minutes Xavier Saliba and Taryk built up a nice counter move with Saliba netting the winner to the jubilation of the crowd at the Corradino Pavilion.

The Malta National Futsal team will be again in action on Monday at 8pm against Greece. Malta’s last match in this Tournament will be against the UAE on Wednesday again at 8pm.
