The 2009/10 badminton Camray Individual Singles League has recently drawn to its close. It was made up of seven separate Singles divisions with several fixtures regularly played throughout the season, on Wednesday evenings at the Cottonera Sports Complex.

Males and females competed together in the same division. One point was awarded to the participants for each set won.

Each fixture was made up of only two sets, thus creating the possibility of a drawn result. This variation, from standard Badminton practice, made the competition even more exciting as some established players unexpectedly lost valuable points against apparently inferior opposition.

The first division title was successfully retained for yet another season by defending champion Boris Lalov (Msida Arrows BC), who finished his commitments unbeaten with ten points, having won four and drawn two of the six matches played.

Stefan Salomone (B’Kara BC) took the runner-up berth, two points adrift of the winner. His match curriculum shows four wins and two losses.

The second division title was won by Stephen Ferrante (Msida Arrows BC) at the end of a hard-fought decider played against Samuel Cali (B’Kara BC) after both players ended their commitments unbeaten on equal points at the top of the table, having drawn their direct encounter during the league.

Ivan Salomone (B’Kara BC) topped the standings in the third division; he was closely followed by Michael Bugeja (Shuttles BC), who was just a single point adrift of the winner.

The final placings in the remaining divisions were as follows:

* Division 4: 1. Arif Rochman – 2. Marika Micallef (both B’Kara BC);
* Division 5: 1. Sigmund Saliba (Msida Arrows BC) – 2. Dominique Francica (Pawla Wolves BC);
* Division 6: 1. Catriona Francica – 2. Cheryl Dimech (both Pawla Wolves BC);
* Division 7: 1. Owen Grech (Pawla Wolves BC) – 2. Lisa Formosa (B’Kara BC).

Badminton Malta expressed its satisfaction at the high standard of play shown by all the participants throughout this competition. It also paid tribute to Camray Co Ltd, whose valuable financial support made this event possible.
