Kunsill Malti għall-iSport following the successful launch of the KMS Goalkeepers’ Academy is now launching the KMS Swimming Academy. The objective of these Sport Academies is to serve as centres of excellence, making use of KMS facilities, staff and international links to provide a unique experience of high performance sport and top expertise. The KMS Academy level provides a platform for those who want to achieve high level success in the competitive arena of sports rather than on a recreational level. It is directed at those who want to compete, perform at the top levels and possibly compete internationally and take sport professionally. Children and youths can progress to this level through ‘Talent Identification’ in one of a number of ways, i.e. the Sport Education Programme, KMS Sport Promotion Unit and the Skolasport Active Programmes such Sports Fun, Community Sports, Social Inclusion programmes and Sport for All. Children identified can either join one of the Sport Academies specialising in a particular sport or join a club/association.

The KMS Swimming Academy will commence shortly under the guidiance of Renzo Galea and other qualified staff. This academy will be a platform through which swimmers will be coached to improve their strokes and times. Eventually, applicants who obtain the required standards will even compete in Time Trials organised by the ASA of Malta under the name of Skolasports. However, the main targets of the Academy are to develop correct swimming technique and achieve competitive times in the strokes. Swimmers have to show commitment, discipline and motivation in the sport of swimming. In case of repetitive absences, lack of motivation and discipline, the swimmers may not be confirmed for the following term.

Participants will be graded and placed in groups according to their swimming ability. As the swimmers progress in their strokes, they will be moved up the groups. Continuous assessment will be held throughout the course in order to place the swimmers in their adequate groups, depending on their effort and improvement. Sessions will take place at the national swimming pool situated at the KMS Tal-Qroqq Sports Complex on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 4pm and 5pm. The National Pool offers a full sized Olympic pool which is heated during the winter months to maintain temperature at 26.5-27 degree Celsius.

Prospective applicants will include those who have already attended swimming sessions organised by any one of the KMS programmes. These include Summer on the Move, Skolasport and swimming sessions organised by the Sport Promotion Unit for school children. Applications are now open and are being received for children aged 5 to 16 years. Only applicants who can already float will be accepted. The fee is €75 per child per term.
