Kirkop sole leaders

This top-of-the-table clash was watched by a sizeable crowd at Mgarr Ground. The game was keenly contested and played at a very fast pace. Kirkop are now sole leaders having maximum points from 7 games six more than their closest challengers Birzebbuga who also have played seven games.
 The first action was created by Kirkop when Karl Caruana served George Aquilina in the area and a defender cleared the ball to a corner which was taken by Aquilina and Asin Scerri failed to get his head to the ball to apply the killer touch.
In an action by Birzebbuga, Christopher Mangion served Alex Muscat in the area and Kirkop keeper Malcolm Attard foiled him with a timely sortie.
Kirkop opened the score in the 9th minute when Brandon Farrugia was fouled outside the area and Scerri scored a beauty with a rising shot in the top right hand corner from 35 metres.
Another two actions were then created by Kirkop. Caruana was fouled on the right flank and Scerri missed the upright from the free kick and Caruana was then fouled on the right flank and Scerri drove slightly over the bar from the free kick.
In another action by Birzebbuga Jean C Cassar released Mangion on the right flank but he drove well off target from outside the area.
In the last action before the break, Ishmael Mizzi was fouled on the left edge of the area and from Scerri’s free kick the ball thumped the bar with Birzebbuga keeper Karl Abela beaten and the ball finished out.
The second period was also action-packed with the first two actions being created by Kirkop. From a flag kick by Aquilina, Scerri drove over the bar from inside the area and the same palyer drove over the bar from a free kick after Caruana was fouled outside the area.
In the first action by Birzebbuga substitute Nicolai Tabone was fouled on the left flank and Christopher Cutajar drove high from the free kick.
In the 55th minute Birzebbuga came very close an equaliser when Clayton Camiller entered the area after beating two defenders and after the ball was deflected from his shot Attard had to dive and save the ball.
Birzebbuga equalised in the 65th minute. Jean C Grech served Cleaven Camilleri with a cross from the right flank and Attard saved his header from inside the area to a corner which was well-taken by Cassar and Cutajar scored with a header in the top left hand corner.
Kirkop then mounted another action as Caruana served Aquilina with a cross from the right and his header from inside the area missed the upright. 
In the 75th minute Birzebbuga came close of scoring the winner when Cutajar served substitute Bjorn Piscopo in the area and after Attard partly saved his shot the ball was cleared away,
A minute before the end of normal time Kirkop scored the winner as Scerri released Caruana on the right flank who then served substitute Alexander Tanti with a cross who scored with a hard rising shot from the edge of the area as he was left un-marked.
