Keith Galea & Hanna Pace Win BSJ Triathlon Series 2014

As expected, Birkirkara St. Joseph’s Keith Galea carried the honours in his Club’s Triathlon Series 2014, unbeaten throughout the four races. In the females’ race Hannah Pace topped the classification after the four races to be crowned series champion for 2014.

Both triathletes won their respective categories in the final race last Sunday. Galea was simply unstoppable and dominant in the three segments of the race. He clocked 10 minutes, 37 seconds in the 750-metre swim, 32 minutes, 53 seconds in the 20-kilometre bike segment, and 18 minutes, 43 seconds in the final 5-kilometre run. He won the race in one hour, three minutes, 29 seconds. Fabio Spiteri of Agones S.C. won the battle for second place in an overall time of one hour, five minutes, 12 seconds, beating Birkirkara St. Joseph’s Graham Borg by one minute, 59 seconds. Keith Galea won the Series in four hours, 14 minutes, 38 seconds, in front of Fabio Spiteri (4:22:09) and Graham Borg (4:24:42). Other winners were Neil Markham of Agones S.C. in the Under 23 category, Holger Mitterer of Agones S.C. in the Over 40 category, Pawlu Brincat of St. Patrick’s A.C. in the Over 50 category, and John Schembri of Qormi C.C. in the Over 60 category.

Hannah Pace’s consistency throughout the series paid good dividends as she finished top of the table after the fourth and final race. She celebrated her success with a personal best time last Sunday at Birzebbuga. She swam the 750 metres in 11 minutes, six seconds, cycled the 20 kilometres in 36 minutes, 40 seconds and ran the 5 kilometres in 21 minutes, 11 seconds, to finish the race in one hour, 10 minutes, nine seconds. Second finished Michelle Vella Wood of Birkirkara St. Joseph in one hour, 12 minutes, 33 seconds and third was Margaret Seguna of Mellieha A.C. in one hour, 13 minutes, 20 seconds. Pace won the Series in four hours, 46 minutes, 41 seconds, in front of Vella Wood (4:52:42) and Seguna (5:00:05). In the other categories Donatelle Camilleri of Mellieha A.C. was first in the Over 40’s, and Sue Farrugia of Birkirkara St. Joseph won the Over 50@s category.

A relay team made up of Jean Claude Cutajar (swim), Steve Sciberras (bike) and Hadrian Bonello (run) won the series in four hours, 14 minutes, 56 seconds.

This sprint triathlon series was organised under the auspices of the Malta Triathlon Federation and sponsored by Festina Watches and The Cyclist of San Gwann.
