Keith Galea & Danica Bonello Spiteri march towards series victory

Tuesday, October 7, 2014, 8:00

Keith Galea of Birkirkara St. Joseph and Danica Bonello Spiteri of St. Patrick’s A.C. maintained their unbeaten runs in their respective categories, in the third race of the Birkirkara St. Joseph Triathlon Series 2014. Their performances in this race further widened their gap at the top of the overall classifications. Both national team triathletes should find no problem this Sunday to clinch the title in the final race of the series.

It was only in the 20-kilometre bike segment of the race that Galea registered the second best time, seven seconds less than Fabio Spiteri’s 33 minutes, 17 seconds. The Agones S.C. man, however, could not match the Galea both in the 750-metre swim and the final five-kilometre run. The Birkirkara triathlete clocked 10 minutes, 58 seconds in the swim and 18 minutes, 44 seconds in the run, to win the race in one hour, 4 minutes, 13 seconds. Spiteri finished second in one hour, six minutes and two seconds, with Graham Borg (Birkirkara St. Joseph) finishing third 49 seconds later.

In the Females race, Bonello Spiteri shrugged off all opposition with another outstanding performance. She swam the 750 metres in 11 minutes, 36 seconds, cycled the 20 kilometres in 37 minutes, two seconds and ran the five kilometres in 21 minutes, 34 seconds. Hannah Pace of Pembroke Athleta finished second in one hour, 12 minutes, 28 seconds, and Mellieha A.C.’s Margaret Seguna finished third in one hour, 13 minutes, 41 seconds.

The fourth and final race of this Series will be held on Sunday, 5th October on the Birzebbuga circuit, starting at 8:00 a.m. Hal Far Road and part of St. Patrick’s Street will be closed for vehicular traffic during the bike segment of the race. This triathlon series is organised under the auspices of the Malta Triathlon Federation and sponsored by Festina Watches and The Cyclist of San Gwann.
