Keith Galea and Danica Bonello Spiteri win twelfth edition

Keith Galea of Birkirkara St. Joseph and Danica Bonello Spiteri of St. Patrick’s A.C. shrugged off all opposition to win the fourth and final race of the 12th edition of the Birkirkara St. Joseph Triathlon Series for 2012.  Both triathletes, having their sights set on the forthcoming national championships, turned on a powerful performance to register an emphatic victory.


In the men’s race, Galea was second out of the 750-metre swim behind team-mate David Agius Lia in 11 minutes 9 seconds. Graham Borg was third finishing the swim in 12 minutes, 3 seconds.  In the 20-kilometre bike segment of the race, Rudolph Agius (Birkirkara St. Joseph) and Fabio Spiteri emerged from the rest of the field with a time of 29 minutes, 48 seconds and 30 minutes, 7 seconds respectively, to Galea’s 30 minutes, 10 seconds.  However none of them could match the winner’s pace in the final 5-kilometre run.  He ran the distance in 17 minutes, 50 seconds to win the race in exactly one hour, and the series in an overall time of three hours, 59 minutes, 13 seconds. Agius finished second in 1 hour, 2 minutes, 23 seconds and Spiteri finished third in 1 hours, 3 minutes, 32 seconds.  Birkirkara St. Joseph claimed the top three places in the final overall classification, with Steve  Chetcuti (4:09:04) in second place, and Rudolph Agius (4:11:01) in third place.


Malta triathlon champion Danica Bonello Spiteri came back from the upset she suffered in the third race of this series, to win dominantly in 1 hour, 7 minutes, 33 seconds.  She made sure of victory in the swim segment of the race, clocking 11 minutes 35 seconds, opening a gap of one minute, 27 seconds on her rival and title contender Michelle Vella Wood of Birkirkara St. Joseph.  The latter reacted strongly with a 33 minutes, 29 seconds 20-kilometre cycle, reducing the gap to 38 seconds.  However it was the champion who had the better 5-kilometre run in 20 minutes, 46 seconds to win the race in 1 hour, 7 minutes, 33 seconds.  Vella Wood clocked 21 minutes, 22 seconds in her run and finished second in 1 hour, 8 minutes, 44 seconds.  Johanna Calleja (Birkirkara St. Joseph) finished third in 1 hour, 11 minutes, 22 seconds.  Bonello Spiteri won the series in 4 hours,29 minutes, 11 seconds, Vella Wood was second in 4 hours, 30 minutes, 34 seconds and Calleja finished  third in 4 hours, 40 minutes, 37 seconds.
