A fine performance by Birkirkara’s latest acquisition, goalkeeper Esequiel Lovison, and a collective team effort led the Stripes to another win in this season’s UEFA Champions League. After having won 7-3 on aggregate against Santa Colomba of Andorra in the 1st qualifying round, Paul Zammit’s side managed another important win today as they beat Slovak Champions MSK Zilina 1-0 thanks to an early goal netted by Nikola Vucanac after only 35 seconds.

The visitors pressed to level the score but were denied on several occasions with fine saves by keeper Lovison. The game had some intense moments with referee Simon Lee Evans from Wales booking no less than nine players five for Birkirkara.

The 2nd Leg of this 2nd round UEFA Champions League qualifying round will be played on Wednesday 21st July in Slovakia and kick off is set for 6pm.

Birkirkara’s Line Up:

E. Lovizon, B. Nisevic, P. Fenech, M. Galea, A. Tabone, A. Decesare, N.Vukanac, C.Pulo, S.Bajada, J.Zerafa, A. Buhagiar.

Patrick Borg came in for Vukanac on the 72nd minute mark whilst Andrew Scicluna and Ryan Scicluna came in for Carl Pulo and Andrew Decesare respectively.

Trevor Cilia, Rowen Muscat and defender Thomas Paris were not available for selection.

Should Birkirkara obtain a positive result next week by either a draw or a win they will enter the 3rd round of the UEFA Champions League wand make history for Maltese football, since the new format of the UCL qualifying system was introduced. In the next round the Stripes can be drawn up against big teams like Ajax of Amsterdam, Celtic of Scotland, Fenerbache of Turkey, or Zenit of Russia amongst other teams who get into the fray at this point of the competition.
