Julian Briffa at MFA

The partial amnesty given to whistleblower Julian Briffa was also on the agenda of yesterday’s MFA Council meeting after it emerged that there was a mistake in the date listed in the motion that was approved by the MFA annual general meeting last month.

At the previous Council meeting, the members had approved a proposal to reduce Briffa’s life ban to one year, starting from the date of his provisional suspension by the MFA Exco on July 31, 2012.

However, the motion approved during the AGM stipulated that Briffa’s one-year ban will start from March 26, 2013, the date when the anti-bribery board handed out the life ban.

“This is not what we intended when we agreed to reduce Briffa’s ban to one year at the last Council meeting,” MFA president Norman Darmanin Demajo said.

MFA officials yesterday agreed to call an extraordinary general meeting on September 3, the date of the next Council meeting, to rectify the mistake.
