Reno Bugeja corners MFA boss in Dissett

Reno Bugeja and his assistant Sergio Mallia, both current affairs journalists with PBS’s newsroom, had enough ammunition to corner the MFA President Joe Mifsud as the latter was the main guest in TVM’s Dissett programme. Dr. Mifsud sat in front of Reno Bugeja and replied to a handful of straight to the point questions some of which were too harsh and unfair towards the MFA boss who obviously was not aware of Bugeja’s agenda and his set of controversial questions.

The programme opened with a feature about the MFA’s administration successes highlighting also Dr. Mifsud’s position in the UEFA Executive committee as Vice President, but once this feature was over it was hell for Dr. Mifsud as journalist Reno Bugeja asked about the recent corruption cases and questioned why it took so long for the MFA to come up with a decision. The PBS journalist also asked why Dr. Mifsud has never filed a libel suit against international journalist Andrew Jennings for the scandalous 2006 feature he had produced for BBC’s Panorama in which Jennings alleged that the quarter of a million dollar sum for Bayern’s friendly game against Malta were deposited into a trust account. Dr. Mifsud denied categorically this alleged claim and said that the sum was deposited into the MFA’s account and not into a trust account. Dr. Mifsud was then asked to watch the clip which was aired during the discussion. Once back in Studio Dr. Mifsud admitted that it was the very first time he watched this clip but said that he was aware of it as it was mentioned in the proceedings of the libel case that Dr. Mifsud filed against Norman Darmanin Demajo.

Dissett also featured a pre-recorded telephone call with Andrew Jennings where Mr. Jennings made an appeal to the MFA President remarking “Might be the case that Joe has nothing to do with this corruption surrounding UEFA and FIFA but since he is a high UEFA official, Joe has to come forward and report corruption at UEFA is he is aware of any”  ended Jennings. This Clip frustrated Dr. Mifsud who claimed that he never met this Jennings and he had no right to call him Joe! An angry Dr. Mifsud said “Dan min hu biex lili jsejjaħli Joe ? Mela qatt kilt il-kirxa miegħu jien ? x’kull waħda wkoll’’

Pressed to give a confirmation about his possible candidacy for the re-election as MFA President the Qrendi born lawyer remarked “I will give details about this in the football family” referring to the MFA’s council or Executive Board.

It is not yet know what led Bugeja to produce such a programme when other PBS’s current affairs programme such as Xarabank and Bondi +, have never investigated the allegations and final court cases  surrounding Maltese football even after the Clubs’ corruption cases came into light last summer.

What is sure is that Reno Bugeja met Norman Darmanin Demajo earlier this week for a short interview clip which was also aired during the programme where the ex MFA Treasurer confirmed officially for the first time that he was running for the post of President in the upcoming July elections.

reno bugeja does not like sports and that programme showed that it was piloted. We ask Disett to do a programme about sports or ask PBS to do a decent football programme

still a good show by dr mifsud . I still question why Mifsud did not make his intentions clear when asked if he is to run for d next elections ? He was also asked if it was true that he was trying to adjust the MFA statute to impeed Darmanin demand to run for pres with the excuse that the MFA may not get financial back up from UEFA. Mark
