Jacques Mizzi’s new chapter starts at Rockingham International circuit

21-year old Jacques Mizzi is writing a new chapter in his racing career this weekend by participating in the opening rounds of the first ever championship – the 2014 Michelin Clio Cup Series – at the 1.94 miles Rockingham International Super Sportscar Circuit in Corby, Northamptonshire in the United Kingdom.

Last year, Jacques registered his best result at the same circuit in the sister championship, the UK Clio Cup, when he finished in 11th position after starting from the back of the grid in the 24th place, thus gaining no less than 13 positions!

This year Jacques hopes to do even better and, hopefully, he will start from a better grid position on Sunday.

His fastest lap in Round 13 last year was I minute 32.996 seconds, and depending on the weather conditions, Jacques looks forward to improve his time.

For timing purposes the circuit is divided into 3 sectors. Jacques is very fast in the second sector and last year he recorded the 2nd and 3rd fastest speed of 88.5 mph and 89.2 mph, respectively, in Rounds 13 and 14.

The Rockingham  International Super Sportscar circuit configuration has 12 turns, and it combines long straights and sweeping high-speed bends. Turn 1 is a fast and difficult corner, while the infield section is slower but highly technical.

Following last year’s learning experience, Jacques is determined to try his best to achieve a good result in the Michelin Series. This is not going to be easy because several experienced young British racing drivers are determined to do the same. With the exception of the driver from Norway, Tommy Ostgaard, Jacques is the only other foreign driver.

Westbourne Motorsport team owner Richard Colburn welcomed Jacques back to his team for 2014, and he had kind words of appreciation for Jacques.  In Richard’s opinion, Jacques has the ability to move to a better position on the starting grid, and he is expected to finish among the top-10 drivers in some of the races and possibly among the top-5 or even a podium finish.

Jacques is receiving a lot of attention from Renault Sport in the UK and other online motorsport columns. With his regular participation in very popular championship events, young Jacques is becoming Malta’s ‘ambassador’ of motorsport in the United Kingdom.

On Friday, Jacques will have some practice sessions, and on Saturday he will have a 20-minute qualifying session starting at 10.55 to determine the positions on the grid for the Sunday races. On Sunday, Jacques has 2 races one in the morning at 10.50, and the second race in the afternoon will be at 15.10.
