The enthusiasm and excitement apparent during the Middle Sea Race in October spilled into November with twenty two boats taking part in the BOV Gozo Weekend Regatta, exceeding all previous records.

The BOV Gozo Weekend Regatta consisted of a series of races starting with a passage race between Malta and Gozo on Friday, a series of windward-leeward races close to Gozo, two short coastal races for Cruising and Double Handed Classes on the Saturday and a passage race down to Malta on Sunday.

From the start, recent Middle Sea Race participants, Isomat Unica, and Elusive II BOV raced close to each other and consistently swapped leads. Races on Friday and Saturday ended up in a tie, making the final race on Sunday decisive for the two boats. After a determined performance by both boats, Isomat Unica, skippered by Jamie Sammut, won the BOV Gozo Weekend Regatta on corrected time.

“The BOV Gozo Weekend Regatta met our expectations. We raced in generally perfect conditions, with some serious challenges posed by fellow competitors on Elusive II BOV. This, of course, made the race more exciting for us,” said Jamie Sammut, skipper of Isomat Unica. “However this Regatta is not just about racing but also about socialising. We all look forward to the evening’s events, where we can discuss the day’s races in a relaxed manner.”

In the Cruisers’ Class Stanley Borg’s XC 45 Xplane won the overall class followed by Sandro Musu’s team on Aziza.

Established on the Royal Malta Yacht Club social calendar, the BOV Gozo Weekend Regatta is popular amongst families and friends of those taking part. They descend on Gozo to enjoy a good weekend of exciting racing and socialising. As has become customary, a Happy Hour was held once all boats arrived.

“Congratulations to Unica and all its crew for being crowned the Overall Winner of the BOV Gozo Regatta as well as to all the twenty-two boats that participated in this weekend of sailing,” said BOV Gozo Regional Manager Horace Laudi, while presenting the attractive BOV Gozo Regatta to Unica skipper Jamie Sammut. “We are glad to have once again collaborated with the Royal Malta Yacht Club in a weekend of healthy competition as well as good camaraderie among participants.”
