Industries Sports Association Short History 1968 – 2018

The Industries Sports Association, or as it is best known, The ISA, is this year celebrating its 50th Anniversary since it was set up in 1968. Much has changed over the years but fifty years on and the ISA is still organising football competitions for the local Private Industries. Past members included many big names such as AirMalta, Bortex, Pantalesco, Attard Brothers, De La Rue, Nylon Knitting, Seven Up, Farsons, Union Print, Allied Newspapers, Mizzi Organisation, Malta Rubber, SGS, Carreras, Bezzina and many more. The first Champions were Mizzi Brothers who won the first competition played between 12 teams.

The Industries Sports Association was set up in 1968. One of its founders was the late Gigi Catania who went on to become one of the most long serving Presidents of the Association besides being a renowned Sports Writer and for some time the Malta Football Association PRO. Mr John R Casha served in the ISA for a very long time in many different Committee appointments from President to Secretary to Treasurer as well, in various prominent positions within the Malta Football Association. Mr John R Casha also an ex-MFA Referee passed away 2 years ago. Past Presidents of the Association, include Magistrate Joseph Soler who was the first President of the Association, Gigi Catania succeeded him. After Gigi Catania’s death Capt. Ripard was appointed President and Major Stanley J Clews was President for four years. Mr John R Casha was then appointed President with the present President Mr Benjamin Rizzo succeeding Mr Casha, both shown below during one of the finals played where Mr Benjamin Rizzo actual President and the late Mr John R Casha are seen presenting the trophy to the winners of the Anniversary Cup, Farsons, in 2010.

The Industries Sports Association was one of the first organisations in Malta to organise football for the workers and played its games on rough surface grounds such as Corradino Ground C, Marsa Ground 5 and the University of Malta. At one point the ISA had 24 playing teams with three divisions, but in those days football was different and the interest in the game was something unexplainable. Each team had a squad of 30 or more players all fighting for those important eleven places. Nowadays, it is very difficult to play an 11-A-Side football match and that is why we took the decision some ten years ago to lower our competitions to a 7-A-Side league. Below are some photos of matches played at Corradino and also a presentation being done to Farsons, one of the best teams of the past with the late President of the ISA Gigi Catania looking on and the late Eddie Zammit receiving the gift on behalf of Farsons with John Spiteri (Farsons) looking on.

Photo below shows Nylon Knitting being presented with the Catania Cup by the late Gigi Catania brother and son during the last season played at Corradino Ground C. Portanier Brothers, Pantalesco, Attard Brothers, Playcraft Trophies, Wurth, Miles Express, Playmobil Malta, Trelleborg, Guthenburg Press and Sports Experience have all sponsored and helped the Association throughout the times. One must not forget as well the various Sport Ministers who helped so much our Association. Nowadays help is mainly from the Malta Football Association, of which the ISA forms part as a Member Association and also Sports Malta.

We played our matches on a synthetic football pitch in Tarxien, and the conditions are very much changed. We have now decent dressing rooms both for the teams as well as match officials. The number of participants has decreased a lot and we now barely have 8 teams left to compete amid all these changes. Our matches are still being officiated by MFA Officials and a doctor / nurse is always in attendance.

Today we play 7-A-Side Football Competitions since teams are finding it a bit hard to get 11 players to play. The name was changed from Soccer Association to Sports Association way back in 2002 as the ISA tried to organise Darts, Shooting and Table Tennis Competitions for all its members. We play our football competitions at the Msida Nursery Ground in the Mater Dei School, near the Sixth Form in Msida on Saturdays with the first match commencing at 14.30 and the other follows at 15.30. All matches are played on 25 minutes each half and as always officiated by MFA Officials with a nurse always in attendance. Competitions start in October and go on till May with a break in the Christmas Period and Easter.

The ISA has its own office as well in the National Pool in Tal Qroqq, where the Executive Committee meets and holds pre season Meetings for the participants.

The ISA has as well its own web site on www.isamalta.org and this is updated with the latest results and information. We put as well match reports and photos of important events. We have as well our own Facebook page Industries Sports Association where one can find all the useful information and assistance from all our members.

We all hope that this dream will continue to live on in honour of the many volunteers who fought so hard to set up the Association and keep it running all these years on voluntary basis as we look forward in welcoming new members.
