International Tennis Europe – European ranking tournamentSunday, December 11, 2011, 14:15
Today the International Tennis Europe ranking tournament came to an end, this was organised by the Marsa Sports Club under the auspices of the Malta Tennis Federation. This attracted as many as 110 players from all over Europe.
Bernard Cassar Torreggiani Malta’s No 1 Junior Champion played exceptionally well in Quarter finals of the European ranking tournament beating the number 4 seed Marco Prohazca (No 6 of Austria) 6/3 6/1. In the previous rounds he beat no 12 seed Cunha Silva from Portugal 6/2 6/0 and also beat the number 8 seed Morell Rasciatore from Spain 7/6 (8) , 6 -3. In the semi finals he lost to UK’s number 1, 14 year old Daniel Little from the UK currently ranked 32 (u14) and 164 (u16) in Europe in a close and thrilling match after having a match point in 3 sets 2/6 6/2 7/6 . Little went on to the final and lost to Italy’s fies Di Prima in 2 close sets.
The girl’s event was won by Russia’s Maria Murfutina (ranked 156 in Europe) against Great Britain’s Maia’s Lumden (ranked 198 in Europe). Maia was leading in the first set 3-0 but after having lost an easy shot for a 4-0 lead, lost her composure and ended up losing to the agressive and determined player from Russia 6/3 6/1.
The boys doubles event was won by portughese duo Eusebio and Saboguero , whilst the girls event was won by Italy’s Gisonna and Napoletano.
Malta’s top junior players Raphael Sammut, Matthew Cassar Torreggiani, Robert Montanaro Gauci, Mark Schranz, Jeremy Borg, Rebecca Mc Carthy, Georgie Farrugiu Sacco and Alexia Cassar also partcipated in the international event .
