International Open and Grand Prix of Table Football organized by MTFSA

During the last weekend of April, the Malta Table Football Sports Association organized the International Open and Grand Prix of Table Football at the Victoria Hotel in Sliema. Both these competitions were held under the auspicious of the F.I.S.T.F. and attracted a good number of foreign and maltese players. There were four different categories for the individuals and a team event.

In the International Open that was held on Saturday, Saverio Bari (ASD F.Lli Bari Reggio Emilia) won the Open category by beating Mark Gauci (ATLAS FTC) 2-1 in a very close final. The semifinalists were Derek Conti (Valletta Subbuteo Club) and Massimo Cremona (ASD F.Lli Bari Reggio Emilia).

The Veteran category was won by Francesco Mattiangeli (ACS Perugia 1973) who beat world number one in the veteran category Joseph Mifsud (SC Fiamme Azzurre CM) 2-1. The other players that reached the semifinals were Jason Pisani (Valletta Subbuteo Club) and Mark Zammit (Bormla Subbuteo Club).

The Under 19 final was between Emanuele Lo Cascio (TS Napoli Fighters) and Darren Bezzina (S.P.Q.R. Roma MMIX). The italian won a very balanced game 2-1. A sudden death goal was needed in the Under 15 final, were Melvin Barun beat Neilmark Bonnici 2-1. Both these youths play for Bormla Subbuteo Club.

On Sunday the Grand Prix was played and in the team event Valletta Subbuteo Club won the final 4-0 against Bormla Subbuteo Club. In the semifinals, Valletta SC beat SC Fiamme Azzurre CM 3-0 and Bormla won against ATLAS FTC 3-1.

Once again, Saverio Bari was in great form to win the Grand Prix Open category, by beating team mate Massimo Cremona 2-1 in another balanced final. The semifinalists were Malta Champion Samuel Bartolo (Valletta Subbuteo Club) and Jean Carl Tabone (ASD SC Palermo) who had a very good run in this competition.

Lazaros Papakonstantinou (ATLAS FTC) won the Veteran competition by beating Francesco Mattiangeli 3-2 after shots. The semifinalists Joseph Mifsud and Steve Austin (Bormla Subbuteo Club).

Under 19 world number one Angelo Borg (Piraeus Lions TSC) won his category by beating Emanuele Lo Cascio 3-2 in an exciting final. The semifinalists were Darren Bezzina and Darren Carabott (SS Lazio TFC Roma) who had a good tournament. The Under 15 category was won by Neilmark Bonnici of Bormla Subbuteo Club, beating team mate Tristan Fenech 2-1 with a sudden death goal.

At the end of the tournament Mr.Anthony Sapiano President of the M.T.F.S.A. presented the trophies to all the category winners.
