The Kavallieri clan celebrating their victory

Rugby champions Kavallieri drew first blood this afternoon in the 2010-11 season as they overcame Stompers with a try in the dying seconds of the match, to win the Ray Elliot’s Cup 17-12 at the Marsa Sports Grounds.

Last year’s Cup winners, Stompers, opened the score with a try from Galea followed by a Camilleri conversion. Kavallieri’s Vassallo managed to bring the steams closer with a try, but Schembri missed the conversion to send Stompers with a 7-5 advantage at half time.

After the break it was Kavallieri who went  ahead for the first time in the game with an impressive Grima try to make it 10-7, but Stompers came back with a Pace-Moore drive to bring the Reds to a 12-10 advantage and five minutes to go.

But it was Kavallieri who had the last laugh, exploiting a Galea blunder, with Grima getting the try followed by a Mallia conversion in the final seconds of the match to bring the cup home with a final score of 18-12.

Carmen Elliot presented the cup and medals to the Kavallieri players at the end of the match. This competition is named after her late husband, Ray Elliot, who was one of the first Kavallieri coaches and was also a well respected figure in international and local rugby.
