Valletta’s Brazilian ace Denni once again gave a sterling performance at Ta Qali to help Valletta get the better of Tarxien Rainbows in Sunday’s top of the table clash. With this win, the Citizens increased their lead to 12 points over Floriana and Tarxien.

Jesmond Zerafa had to do without the suspended Andrew Hogg and the injured Jamie Pace, both being substituted by Nicky Vella and Edmond Agius respectively. Zerafa now needs to assess the condition of captain Gilbert Agius who sustained an injury to his leg towards the end of the first half. Tarxien were missing their Brazilian midfielder Sergio while Grioli was relegated to the bench as he was replaced by Manuel Caruana.

Valletta had the lion’s share of opportunities in the first half but it was only in the 44th minute that they surged ahead from a Terrence Scerri penalty after Denni was tripped inside the penalty area. Denni, voted man of the match, got his name on the scoresheet in the 70th minute as his powerful drive hit the back of then net right in front of his ex-supporters.

Nwoke paves way for Floriana’s emphatic victory over Vittoriosa

Floriana’s Daniel Nwoke has proven to be an important signing for the Greens as his two goals in quick succession in the beginning of the match facilitated matters for Raykov’s side. Vittoriosa were missing the experienced defenders Jeffrey Chetcuti and Stephen Wellman together with Edison up front as these were all suspended.

Nwoke opened his scoring account in the 14th minute when he flicked in a Pablo Doffo cross and barely three minutes later the Nigerian’s name was on the scoreboard again after a tap-in from an altruistic Ivan Woods cross.

Woods was rewarded for his fine performance on the day, when on the stroke of half-time he headed home yet another perfect Doffo cross. After the break, the Greens kept attacking relentlessly, and grabbed their fourth goal with a powerful Draganov drive from outside the penalty area. Those at Ta’ Qali only needed to wait a couple of minutes to witness another goal as Woods got his second goal of the day from the penalty spot.

Vittoriosa finally found the back of the net in the 74th minute with a fine Grech chip but more misery awaited them when in the 81st minute Mano Micallef lobbed the ball over goalkeeper Vella for a final 6-1 scoreline.
