Introducing Dione ‘Maroushka’ Galea W20-L6-D3.

I first met Dione in 1996 at Bertu’s Gym where I had been training for 2 years.  Dione had boxed six times by then. Now at 29 fights over a fighting career of 22 years, Malta’s veteran fighter from Kalkara hangs his gloves. His parent club is Dione Boxing Club in an old English Army Barracks but is also a member of the Art of Fighting, run by Simon Checuti and Brown’s Boxing Club run by Michael Brown.

Some facts: Since 1992 Galea has boxed in Sixteen different fight night venues. 9 fights at the Dolmen Hotel, 3 fights at the Monte Krito eastates,2 fights at Orpheum Theatre, De La Salle Collage, and the Sky Club as well as the Pace Grasso, Qawra Palace, Eden Palldium, Palazzo Peskafore, Topaz Hotel, Corrodino Pavillion, Exiles Sliema, Naxxar Trade Fair Grounds and MFCC Ta Qali. He has fought against fighters from Malta, England, Scotland Tunisia, Ivory Coast, Irelan and Italy. He has also represented Malta in world Kickboxing Championships, winning the 2012 edition held in Italy. Galea has Boxed no less than 93 rounds in his career, 8 of his 29 fights are by way of knock out. The Maltese Boxing Association announced that it shall induct Dione Galea as an Honorary Lifetime Member along side the great Bertu Camilleri of Ghaghur.

Overall, Galea achieved his greatest moment in the sport earlier this year, taking the EBF Middleweight European belt with a courageous victory over James Mongomery. A string of injuries to his Retna have disrupted the 36-year-old’s career in recent years and he made the tough decision to hang up his gloves after this latest setback.

“I wasn’t feeling anything in the fights previous to that. It’s unfortunate, but I’ve achieved my ultimate goal. I don’t think you’ll find many happier retired fighters than myself and I look forward to the future now.” Said Galea

The official induction shall take place on the Malta National Boxing Awards ceremony being held early in 2015.
