PRESS RELEASE BY THE PARLIAMENTARY SECRETERIAT FOR YOUTH, SPORTS AND VOLUNTARY ORGANISATIONS

The Annual Pre-Season Seminar for Match Officials and Referee Observers, being held between Wednesday 16th August and this Saturday 19th August at the Westin Dragonara Resort, St. Julians, was officially opened by the Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Sport and Voluntary Organisations, Hon. Clifton Grima.
In his address to the 150 participants, Dr. Grima said that “sports unites people. Sports unites countries. We must work hard in order to ensure that our sport, in this case football, is respected.” Dr Grima pointed out that in order for football to be respected and grow in our country, its integrity is crucial. He stated that the new proposed legislation will safeguard the different sporting disciplines from abuse and criminality, and preserve the unpredictability of the result of a sporting contest until its natural end.
Director of Refereeing Kevin Azzopardi thanked Dr. Grima for his presence and support to the local refereeing community. He said that following a season that included various initiatives, the upcoming season will also witness a number of key projects that will continue to enhance the development of Maltese refereeing both locally and also overseas.
The main guest for this annual event was UEFA Instructor Jorn West Larsen from Denmark.
