Hotsticks  2      Rabat   3

Umpires   Reno Cremona   Andre Ghio

Both teams spent the first quarter of the game sizing each other up with play concentrated in midfield but unable to unlock each other’s defence.   Hotsticks did not take advantage of two penalty corners in the 16th minute and play continued to be intense with defences on top until the 27th minute at the first time of asking Rabat went ahead when Shawn Falzon slotted home following a penalty corner action.   Three minutes later Hotsticks missed a golden opportunity to equalize when Steve Cachia fluffed his shot when in clear sight of goal.   Half time was reached with Rabat holding onto their slender lead.

Six minutes into the second half Hotsticks equalized when a speculative hit into the D was deflected into the net off the goal keeper’s pads.   Rabat hit back immediately and in the 44th minute they won a penalty corner and James Azzopardi shot them into a 2 – 1 lead.  The game swung from end to end and in the 50th minute Steve Portelli hit the bar for Hotsticks.   A minute later Rabat intercepted a pass in midfield with Jonathan Micallef lashing on to the ball beating the goalkeeper to send his team into a 3 – 1 lead.  Hotsticks then pressed forward and for a second time Steve Portelli hit the bar in the 54th minute.   Almost immediately he just missed the target, hitting a delightful reverse stick shot from the top of the D.   In the 66th minute Julian Zahra grabbed Hotsticks’ second but despite increasing their efforts, Rabat hung on to register a narrow victory and move into third place in the table.

Young Stars    10       White Hart   0

Umpires   Luke Busuttil Leaver   Manuel Imbroll

It took just twelve minutes for Young Stars to break down White Hart’s defence when Clive Williams netted a reverse stick shot from the left side of the D.   They continued to press forward and in the 18th minute White Hart’s Patrick Meli  cleared a ball spectacularly off the line with his goalkeeper beaten.   White Hart hit back but did not take advantage of three penalty corner attempts.  They were unlucky not to equalize when soon after Keith Laferla hit the post.   The game then turned on its head when Luke Borg Costanzi scored for Young Stars in the 27th minute.     They scored their third in the 33rd minute when Clive Williams calmly converted a penalty stroke and Jamie Mifsud notched their fourth goal a minute later, a lead they maintained up to the break.

The second half turned into a one sided affair with Mark Camilleri scoring Young Stars’ fifth as a result of a penalty corner action two minutes into the half.   Luke Borg Costanzi  then grabbed his second and Young Stars’ sixth in the 48th minute.  Three minutes later he completed his hat trick scoring his team’s seventh goal when White Hart’s defence was being breached with ease.   Mark Camilleri scored his second and Young Stars’ eighth in the 58th minute and there was still time for Stars to add two more goals to their tally when Samuel Borg scored the ninth and Luke Borg Costanzi his fourth to give Young Stars a comprehensive 10 – 0 victory sending them to the top of the league table.
