3rd /4th place

Sliema Hotsticks 3 Rabat 1 (H/T 0 – 0) Umpires David Agius Ray Micallef

Although Hotsticks enjoyed territorial advantage for the first half of the match they did not avail themselves of the only two penalty corners awarded to them and came close to scoring two minutes before half time when Ludolf Rasterhoff’s cross shot shaved the far post.

The game sprung to life in the 46th minute when Lukas Plaehn netted from a penalty corner action putting Hotsticks in the lead. A minute later Rabat won a penalty corner of their own and Kevin Micallef slotted home to equalize. Hotsticks were then awarded a penalty stroke in the 55th minute and Shaun Grima mishit his shot from the spot. Hotsticks still continued to apply pressure and took a 2 – 1 lead in the 62nd minute when a Grima shot was deflected but Rasterhoff pounced to put the ball away. They made sure of winning the third spot in the tournament when just before time Julian Zahra scored to register a 3 – 1 victory.

Floriana Young Stars 4 Poiatti Qormi 5 (H/T 1 – 4) Umpires Luke Busuttil Leaver Manuel Imbroll

A game that was a pleasure to watch for neutrals but proved to be a heart stopper for both sets of team supporters. A quiet first ten minutes did not herald things to come. Suddenly the game sprung to life and in the 19th minute Jonathan Borg shot Qormi ahead with a delightful reverse hit shot from the top of the D. A minute later John Williams netted to shoot Qormi 2 up and they went further ahead in the 22nd minute when Williams notched his second pushing home after receiving from Luke Brincat. Kyle Micallef sent Qormi 4 – 0 up on 27 minutes and a couple of minutes later Ivan Magro Dingli pounced on a deflection off the Qormi goalkeeper’s pads to reduce the arrears for Young Stars, the half time whistle sounding with Qormi leading by 4 goals to one.

Young Stars started the second half on attack and after winning three penalty corners in as many minutes Luke Borg Costanzi shot home from the top of the D on 39 minutes, reducing the score to 2 – 4. They continued exerting pressure on Qormi’s defences and came close on two occasions but were caught on the break in the 54th minute when Steve Tanti put Borg through to notch his second and send Qormi into a commanding 5 – 2 lead. Young Stars would just not lie down and in the 64th minute Mark Camilleri scored Young Stars third goal from a penalty corner action. A minute later they were awarded a penalty stroke and Andrew Camilleri stepped up to score from the spot and register their fourth goal. The last five minutes were played at a frantic pace with both sides creating a couple of chances but in the end Qormi ran out 5 – 4 winners to claim the trophy.
