Hockey: Qormi and Hotsticks emerge victorious

Thursday, April 2, 2015, 19:48

Qormi enjoyed early territorial advantage and went ahead when Thomas Degiovanni scored in the 9th minute shooting home from the top of the D. They went further ahead five minutes later when Juan Sarcia picked his spot as a result of a penalty corner action. Degiovanni grabbed his second and Qormi’s third in the 28th minute when he pounced onto a rebound after Ian Azzopardi, Rabat’s custodian, dived full length to his left to parry a drive from a penalty corner. A depleted Rabat side fought back and after a prolonged melee in the Qormi D, Mario Galea scored to reduce the arrears just before half time.

Although Qormi kept up the pressure during the second period they could not break down Rabat’s read guard despite being awarded a number of penalty corners On the other hand Rabat’s counter attacks became more dangerous as the game wore on and in the 66th minute Charlot Antontelli’s shot from close range was saved by Qormi’s custodian, after having already smothered two previous one-on-one situations. The final whistle blew with Qormi securing their place in the final .

After Mark Zahra of White Hart had a shot saved off the line in the 8th minute Hotsticks broke into their rhythm and started to dominate proceedings from mid field. Hotsticks went ahead in the 15th minute when Steve Portelli netted as a result of penalty corner action. White Hart played the waiting game in defence and this frustrated Hotsticks’ efforts to the extent that after David Agius had a shot smothered by their defence, they could not add to their tally by half time.

The pattern of the game did not change in the second half and Hotsticks did not take advantage of two penalty corners awarded to them in the first three minutes after the break. White Hart depended on sharp counter attacks and the Hotsticks goalkeeper was instrumental in smothering two of their efforts. White Hart’s defence held out until the 62nd minute when Silas Plaehn netted as a result of a penalty corner action. White Hart threw caution to the wind and attacked with all their elements but were caught out two minutes from time when Portelli, who was unmarked, grabbed his second and Hotsticks’ third goal when he picked his spot to endorse his side’s 3 – 0 victory.
