Hockey: Evenly fought out battle sees Rabat take the win

Tuesday, January 20, 2015, 12:19

Young Stars Remax     2         Rabat   3      Umpires  Paul Brincat   Emile Borg

Both teams worked hard to take a stranglehold of mid field early on in the game but Rabat drew first blood when in the 20th minute they were awarded a penalty corner and Jason Vella netted.    Five minutes later Rabat took full advantage of another penalty corner award when Shawn Falzon hit home to send his team 2 – 0 up.    Young Stars reacted and their pressure drew dividends when, a few seconds before the half time whistle blew, Samuel Borg cut in from the right  and scored from a very acute angle.

The second half developed into a ding dong battle the tempo increasing as the game wore on.   In the 49th minute Borg snatched his second goal pushing home  to draw Young Stars level.   Throwing all caution to the wind, Young Stars went all out on the attack leaving themselves exposed to Rabat’s counter attacks and James Mizzi, their keeper saved the day on three occasions.    But well into the last minute of the game, in another Rabat counter attack Mario Galea rounded the Young Stars’ keeper before hitting a beauty into the top corner of the net to give his team a last gasp victory and move them into third place at the end of the first round.
