Matches between these two teams always produce keen encounters producing unpredictable results, and this occasion was not an exception.    Qormi went ahead as early as the fourth minute when they were awarded a penalty stroke and Juan Sarcia shot them ahead.   On 10 minutes they went 2 – 0 up when Thomas Degiovanni found the net from the top of the D.    Qormi increased their lead five minutes later when they were awarded their second penalty stroke and Sarcia once again picked his spot for his team to take an early 3 – 0 lead.  Although stunned, Hotsticks reacted forcing a couple of goal stopping saves from Qormi’s young keeper Shameson Mifsud.  He affected another blinding save from close range in the 31st minute to keep his goal intact.    Qormi were then awarded yet another penalty stroke just before half time and Sarcia scored notching his hat trick sending his team  4 – 0  up.

Four minutes into the second half Degiovanni grabbed his second to shoot Qormi’s  fifth goal but Hotsticks still battled away and on 50 minute, Shaun Grima reduced the arrears.    Hotsticks again came close to reducing the score but were denied another time by Mifsud in the Qormi goal.  Ryan Dalli scored Hotsticks second goal just before the final whistle leaving Qormi winners by a 5 – 2 margin.

Rabat   1     Qormi Poiatti  4

Umpires    Edward  Hughes      Tony Azzopardi

After Rabat had squandered a penalty corner opportunity in the 9th minute, on 14 minutes Kevin Micallef netted to give them a one goal lead.    Buoyed by that success they continued to apply pressure but Qormi’s young keeper Shameson Mifsud denied them going further ahead.   On 24 minutes Qormi were awarded a penalty corner and Juan Sarcia converted to level the score a 1 – 1.  After fluffing two other penalty corner opportunities Steve Tanti, Qormi’s captain, shot them into a 2 – 1 lead on 30 minutes – a lead they held at half time.

After the change of ends, Qormi continued to dominate territorially but could not translate their pressure into goals as Rabat were well marshaled defensively and were capable of launching swift counter attacks down the flanks.   On 58 minutes Qormi were awarded a penalty stroke and Sarcia grabbed his second goal to send his team 3 – 1 up.    Although they continued to apply pressure it was not until the final minute of the game that Thomas De Giovanni put the game beyond doubt when he notched Qormi’s fourth goal and sealed victory for his side.

Laferla White Hart    3       Young Stars   3

Umpires   Paul Brincat     Glen Bonello

Karl Tua shot White Hart ahead in the 4th minute with a crisp effort from the top of the D.   They continued to play one touch hockey and it was not until the 20th minute that Mark Camilleri the Young Stars captain  picked up a rebound off the White Hart keeper’s pads to level the score at one apiece.    Young Stars continued to exert constant pressure, winning three penalty corners around the 30th minute and Camilleri shot them into a 2 – 1 lead two minutes later off a similar action to his first goal.    Just before the interval Jamie Mifsud scored for young Stars to send his team 3 – 1 up.

Early in the second half White Hart blew a couple of early chances and  Chircop, who played a blinder,   affected a double save off Luke Borg Costanzi on 50 minutes.    White Hart reduced the arrears on 59 minutes when Liam Azzopardi netted after a melee inside the D.  Two minutes later Keith Laferla scored to level the score at 3 – 3.  Both teams then threw caution to the wind but Young Stars did not avail themselves of three penalty corners towards the end of the game and White Hart nearly snatched victory just before the final whistle blew leaving this exciting game deadlocked at 3 – 3.

As already notified a league match was played last wednesday between Young Stars  and Rabat which ended in a 3 – 0 victory for Young Stars

As early as the first minute Qormi were awarded a penalty corner and White Hart’s keeper, Ramon Chircop, affected a diving save to keep his goal intact.    Qormi spent the greater part of the game pounding White Hart’s defences but were denied by a well organized tactical plan,  coupled with an outstanding goalkeeping display by Chricop.  In fact by half time Qormi had won nine penalty corners but had not been able to break the deadlock.

The second half continued on the same pattern with the pace of the game becoming more frantic , White Hart gaining in confidence as the game wore on while Qormi continued their barrage on the White Hart post.  On 51 minutes White Hart were awarded their first penalty corner and Qormi’s custodian Shamison Mifsud dived to his right to push away a close range shot which was destined to go into the net.  Qormi finally went ahead in the 65th minute when Juan Sarcia hit a bullet into the far corner of the net as a result of yet another penalty corner action.  The game drew to a close with Qormi winning this tussle 1 – 0 to consolidate their position at the top of the table at the end of the first round of the league.
