Hibs triumph in six-goal thriller

A very entertaining game which kept the sizeable crowd present breathless till the end as both teams played fast and entertaining football till the final whistle.

Valletta were the first to threaten in the 8th minute as Miguel Attard served Dean Grech with a cross from the left and Hibs keeper Rudy Briffa saved his shot from inside the area.

The Paolites forged ahead in their first attack in the 9th minute when Jurgen De Gabriel served Deyan Farrugia with a through ball in the area and scored with a lobbed ball past the onrushing City keeper Ryan Caruana.

Encouraged by such an early lead Hibs kept pressing and mouted two further actions.Rednor Farrugia released De Gabriele on the right flank and Caruana neutralised the ball from his dangerous cross and after a flag kick by De Gabriele, Rednor Farrugia headed over the bar.

Valletta then mounted two actions in a row. Dean Grech served Llywelyn Cremona with a through ball and Briffa saved his shot from outside the area and the same player served Miguel Attard on the right flank and the ball was cleared to a corner following his cross.

Two minutes before the break Paola H doubled the score when Timothy Tabone served Neil Chetcuti with a through ball outside City’s area and he scroed with a hard rising shot from 40 metres in the top right hand corner of the net, and just before the half time whistle Valletta reduced the gap when Luke Scicluna floated a high ball in the area from a free kick and Cremona scored from inside the area.

Five minutes after restart Valletta equalised when Dean Grech served Marco Catalano with a cross from the right and he scored from inside the area.

In the 57th minute Hibs were denied by the wood work when Tabone served Dunstan Vella in the area with the ball hitting the upright and finished in Caruana’s waiting hands.

Hibs regained their one-goal lead in the 59th minute as Neil Chetcuti served Darren Sciberras in the area and after he was tripped De Gabriele made no mistake from the resultant penalty.

City keeper Caruana then neutralised the ball from a cross by substitute Zack Scerri after a back-pass by De Gabriele and in their next attack Hibs nearly increased their lead as De Gabriel served Sciberras in the area and the ball was cleared on the line to a corner by a defender.

The score became 4-2 two minutes before the end of normal time with a choral move between three players. Tabone served Sciberras with a through ball who returned the compliment to De Gabriele in the area who scored from inside the six-yard box.

In the third minute of added time Valletta were awarded a penalty as Cremona was tripped in the area after being put through by Grech. Cremona took charge of the spot kick and Rudy Briffa saved his hard grounder.
