Hell to break loose in the last weekend of August

Malta is being recognised as the perfect setting for extreme events that mix together beautiful seaside, challenging bike trails and offroad running. In particular, the Majjistral Nature Reserve in Ghajn Tuffieha has the potential to become the choice venue of an international movement’s Xterra Race Weekend. Xterra is an international franchise that organises sporting challenges and events akin to the famous Ironman races, however they are more accessible due to their lower entry cost, a shorter distance, and include a variety of events over the weekend.

Hellfire Challenge 2010 is an Xterra-type event being held on the 28th and 29th August 2010 that will include a 9km offroad trail run on the Saturday evening, and a triathlon on the Sunday morning. The triathlon includes a full distance of 1km swim, 20km bike and 8km run, as well as a half distance and a team relay. The challenge is held entirely offroad and requires no traffic management. It is organised within strict eco-friendly parameters including biodegradable route markings, clean-up of the venue and a zero-tollerance to race littering. Hellfire is working towards becoming a recognised Xterra Event which will bring hundreds of international competitors to Malta and Gozo next year.

Beginners and top athletes alike will take part in either or both of the challenges. The aim is to experience the tough terrain, pace yourself, and finish the race ‘in one piece’. Those who want to test their mettle and race ‘flat out’ will surely feel satisfied by surviving the extreme terrain that will leave even the fittest athlete breathless.

The organisers encourage everyone with a good level of fitness to take part, either as part of a team or as individuals. More information can be found at www.hellfiretriathlon.com, or by joining the Facebook group Triathlon Malta. The event is supported by The Radisson Blue Hotel Golden Sands, Medcomms, The Cyclist of San Gwann, BBB Bike Parts, and others. The organisers would like to thank the Gaia Foundation, B’Kara St Joseph Sports Club, the Malta Triathlon Association and the local councils for their tremendous support. Participants are being encouraged to fundraise over and above their entry fee for Inspire, who’s Ability Challenge bears similarities with this event.
