Gavin Muscat

To mark the 20th anniversary since its founding. The Malta Handball Association organized an international friendly versus neighbors Italy Under23. Following last summer’s commitments in Kosovo where the Maltese national team emerged victorious against Ireland and China anticipation was high for the encounter with Italy.

The Maltese squad were the first to open the score line with a quick goal right at the start of the game. However the Italians fought back and were quick to open a five goal lead. A sterling performance by Maltese keeper Daniel Tanti ensured the goal difference was quickly reduced. By half time, the score stood 13-18 in favor of the Italians.

The second half saw the utilization of the entire Maltese squad and slowly but surely the boys in red made a dramatic come back to reduce the deficit from seven goals down to two. With two minutes left on the clock two missed opportunities for the Maltese saw the Italians seal the win with three goals. None the less, a very good performance by the Maltese squad with a final score of 28-25.
