Final Score Hamrun 1 -1 Valletta.

Leaders Valletta failed to beat Ħamrun Spartans after a lively second half that ended in a 1-1 draw.

Valletta opened the score thanks to a Roderick Briffa low shot in the 57th minute. When Ħamrun Spartans were seeing their Championship Pool hopes fade away, ex-Valletta Dyson Falzon had other intentions and his superb volley beat Andrew Hogg in the 77th minute. Two minutes later Terence Scerri  missed a golden chance to make it 2-1 after Omar Borg saved his penalty. Ħamrun now join Qormi on 20 points, three points behind Marsaxlokk while unbeaten Valletta have 41 points from seventeen games.

Ħamrun Spartans know that next week’s important match against Vittoriosa is going to be vital as with a win, they might avoid Relegation Pool.

Valletta coach Jesmond Zerafa gave the full debut to newly recruitment Anderson Andrade who replaced Edmond Agius and started alongside top scorer Terence Scerri. Midfielder Ryan Fenech made his first appearance against his former team Ħamrun since he joined the Citizens last week but had to be substituted in the first part of the game due to an injury.  The leaders came from a positive run last week after beating Sliema Wanderers 4-1.

Ħamrun coach Steve D’Amato opted for a defensive 4-5-1 formation. Wingers Marcelo Pereira and former Dyson Falzon supported lone striker Dene Shields. Ħamrun Spartans suffered a 3-2 defeat last week against fifth place Marsaxlokk.

In today’s first match Qormi climbed to sixth place after beating Champions Birkirkara 4-1 thanks to a Michael Mifsud hat-trick and a Santos Souza’s penalty.
